Hello, I want to do 2 MGU files that I can use with RealBand: those are 2 songs from King Crimson, "In the Court of the Crimson King" and "In the Wake of Poseidon". All my efforts with the chord wizard are not satisfying. Could you tell me what is the most appropriate way to obtain a good result, including realtracks? It's to test some personal compositions to see how it sounds in this style. I have the 2010 version of BIAB and RealTrack with the UltraPlus pack. And I don't find a good realdrums style sounding well. Many thanks for your help. François

Sorry, I think I have to build a style, not a MGU. Maybe someone did it ... where is it possible to find users styles on the web? And after that, I would like to find other progressive music styles (Caravan, Soft Machine ...). Thanks. François

I would seriously doubt whether you could re-create something like "In the Court of the Crimson King" using BAIB. The original has dozens of separate Mellotron parts which create the effect of a giant orchestral "pad". Orchestral parts have never been BAIB's strongpoint - its focus has been on single part string sections which you find on dozens of pop, jazz and country records and not on full orchestras! The accompaniment lines are generally very syncopated (with parts often starting other than on beat one/bar one) and, again, BAIB tends to be much more 4 to the floor in creating parts. Robert Fripp's guitar parts contain a lot of harmonics and sound like they are played in a variety of tunings - the simple BAIB real tracks could never replicate this. Finally, Michael Giles drum sound is very "1960s" and very old fashioned in today's terms (the sound lacks attack and definition - I think it sounds like he is playing mini tympanis with felt beaters rather than toms) - none of the real styles I can think of come close to this sound. His style of playing has a lot of very gradiose fills which suit the song, but would overpower 99% of other songs I know and there are long sequences where he is mixing snare rolls with fills - not unique, but very unusual and not at all very "BAIB". One other thought is that the song has huge changes in dynamic levels and instumentation - again, BAIB is not maybe the best tool for this sort of approach.
I would look forward to "RT 102" - prog rock though!
Best wishes Brian

Thanks FB for a great question, I also am deeply inspired by the progressive examples you mention, and would love to be able to introduce such creativity into my dramatic songwriting.
And thank you Fifer for your excellent explanation of the challenges of using BIAB to achieve it.
One related question I have is how good BIAB/RealBand may be for writing songs that swing between different time signatures? So far, my experiments seem to suggest that it works sometimes, really depends on the style.
For songwriting, is there a better solution out there than BIAB to allow me to swing into odd time signatures and back? Any tips for doing this in BIAB?

You can recreate Mahavisnu Orchestra pieces with Bandinabox, so why not King Crimson?

Hi FB, Instead of starting from ground zero on these types of songs I would find a midi file that you like and import it into RealBand. I googled “In the Court of the Crimson King” + midi and found these two sites http://www.frakctured.ukf.net/MIDI.htmhttp://www.myguitarsolo.com/midis.htmNote that there are other sites as well. Once into RB you can tweak the songs until you get it the way you want it. I hope this helps – good luck
I just posted a selfie and all of the responses were get well soon!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
