Kaspersky recovery disc. Download it an burn an ISO image. Then set the computer to boot from this disc. It's a linux based disc so Windows will not load and neither will the virus. While it's asleep Kaspersky will torch it.

I've used malewarebytes.com. It's free to download, but I like John's idea.

I've removed a few 'security tools' type malware recently for different people.

I've learned the first thing to try is the one I mentioned, and done as I described (safe mode after updating).

It may be necessary to download the prgram and/or update file to a portable drive or CD, as some of these malwares block the update.
The update is important, I had a situation where a two day old definition file missed it. They do updates constantly, once a day it seems. So they do their best to stay current.

It can get ugly when dealing with these types of things, so if the download gets blocked, go to a different computer and download the update file, then just copy the file to infected machine, writing over the previous one. Suggest using CD as the inter-medium, as it can't get infected like a thumb drive could.

Just sayin', I've done these type removals a few times and have a little experience recently if ya want to try it.
One of the worst is the one that spoofs MS security package. Hard to uninstall deep enough to remove, but can be done.
I feel for you spending days on it, I know I did the first time too.

rharv is on track telling you to boot in safe mode. If you know where the Malware file is, (hiding in a folder on your computer) you can delete it if you boot in safe mode. When you boot windows the Malware is installed with it and it won’t let you delete it. In safe mode windows only installs some files. You can then find the file if you know the name and where it is and delete it. Then shutdown and re- boot. It should be gone. This happened to me once and using safe mode worked for me. Can’t lose anything but the malware.

I say let the antimalware program do it for you in safe mode. It'll find things (like registry entries) in a few minutes that it would take me days to find...
but you're right, safe mode is the key to being able to remove a lot of them.

rharv,

Just checking because there's a potential for serious problems....

I did a search for "antimalwarebytes" and discovered the below at

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic146056.html
Quote:

Techspot is great and very helpful / generous. But this problem is getting lotsa folks. The term 'Antimalwarebytes', [should be Malwarebytes], is picked up in chat and forums. It gets enetered in search here at Techspot and the Trojan downloading site..W.W. Anti-malware-2010.org.....pops up.

Difficult to warn against, I know. There are so many similar close-to-name traps one can hardly warn against them all.

Malwarebytes is excellent!. I ran it and the results were FAST and better than expected. This malware cleaner is rising fast and sadly, the human auto-mode tends to type in Antimalwarebytes. [Human nature?], so lots of auto-mode people, [like me], are going to get Trojans loaded by that -2010 malicious website.

This task, should you accept the challenge, is to warn folks when they enter this term in your downloads search window.

I notice 'Antimalwarebytes' even shows up in Google ads. Those guys must be getting into lotsa PCs. Thanks, TG

Did you mean "malwarebytes"? The program that's found at

Noel

Yes Noel, that's the site and the software.

Thanks.
Wasn't aware of the spoof on the name; this is why we can't have nice things.
I usually go in through the front door-

Hi rharv,

I just downloaded and ran the program. It's terrific. Thank you for the link. It picked up a couple of things on my computer that I didn't know I had!

Noel

I run it once or twice a week for just that reason.
Always update it first!

Another good one is Superantispyware. This one picks up some of the other odds and sods that Malwarebytes misses, mainly the milder nasties such as tracking cookies.

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Just click on the red free edition, download and install it. Remember to update it before running a scan. It also sits quietly monitoring in the background which Malwarebytes doesn't unless you pay for their full version.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
