hi

I've tried double-clicking and also right-clicking > open with... option to open a file with BIAB, but it's not working, and I tried this with all file types

I always have to go to File > Open and navigate to the folder where the file is, then it will open

is there a way to fix this?

thanks
mimmo

Hi mimmo,

Under the "File" menu in BIAB, go to "File Utilities" and then select the option "Associate File Types with Windows". That might do the job for you.

All the best,
Noel

There are a few other threads about this, although some were in the beta testing stage where we discovered this. If I recall correctly, in addition to what Noel says, I think it makes a difference what you have set in Preferences for the program to do on startup. If you have that set to load the previous song, I think it overrides the song selected with double-click. I'll check that advice later when I get to a music PC. Experiment in any event, and if you don't find success, do a search for the excellent explanation by PG Music. I think it was either Andrew or Kent.

In addition to this mimmo if you are running vista or win7 you should right click on the BIAB shortcut on the desktop and run as administrator first then do what Noel has stated. I am not sure if you need to do this step with XP or others.

thanks everyone
I did use the "associate the file types with windows" option and that worked great for most file types, however I was hoping to associate KAR files as well

I am running XP and I used the file association option in explorer to associate KAR files with BIAB but for some reason BIAB does not open the KAR file when I double-click it

Hi again, mimmo,

Glad to hear that the "Associate files" worked. With the KAR files, what procedure did you follow? If my memory serves me correctly, what I used to do in XP was ...
  • Find a file of the type that needed opening
  • Press Cntrl (or it might have been Shift) and right-click, and then choose "Open With"
  • Now select "Choose default program"
  • Navigate to the\bb directory and select BBW.EXE
  • I also seem to recall a box with something like "Always use this program" that had to be checked too.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Regards,
Noel

hi Noel
thanks for the reply, yes I tried that as well with no luck. strange, because the icon for KAR files is the BIAB icon, but it's not opening up the file
No big deal, but I find it more convenient to have a folder open with all the files and then open them up from there, rather than navigating with the File > Open option within the software

Have you tried the hot key "F3" to open files within the software?

The file displays the BIAB icon because of the file association. However, I believe the file associations trigger the standard OPEN command, but BIAB has a different menu option for OPEN KARAOKE (KAR)FILE. (The standard OPEN command won't open a KAR file.)

One way to avoid navigating the directories to your KAR folder would be to use the FILE>FAVORITE FOLDERS command to set the default search directory.

That way when you click FILE>OPEN KARAOKE, at least the file open dialog will go straight to the right folder.

(Maybe not as simple as double clcking the file, but it works every single time.) Hope this helps!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
