If I generate and regenerate a song in BIAB (or Real Band) using a Real Tracks style, and then export that song in midi format, will that midi file data include all of the "real" articulations, solos, etc. of the Real Tracks version of the song? In other words, if I come up with a BIAB using Real Tracks that I like, is there any way to import that song into a DAW and assign different VST instruments (such as Kontakt) while keeping the real performance aspect generated by the Real Tracks?

One other question - If I have a BIAB file with a melody line in it, can I assign a Real Tracks instrument (such as a sax) to that melody line? If so, how would I do this in RealBand?

Thanks!!

No, sorry. RT's are audio files. They have been transcribed as midi in order to facilitate the notation for those files that support notation but all the "real" articulations that you refer to are lost. Think about it, the sax soloist RT does a lip slide for one note, how could you transcribe that as midi except with the well known and lame pitch bend controller? That's what RT's are all about, a real player playing a real instrument.

What about the specific performance, then? For example, if the Real Tracks style I am using generates a solo for a song, can I export the song in midi format and at least have the notes of the solo in midi, if not the actual articulations you mention?

In addition, can I assign a Real Track instrument, such as a sax, to a midi melody line in an existing BIAB song?

Thanks!!

How does that square with the answer to #44 in the FAQ:

"Can I replace any MIDI track with a RealTracks instrument? Yes, you can replace any MIDI track in any Band-in-a-Box song or style with the RealTracks instrument of your choice. You can have any combination of MIDI and RealTracks in your song."

The FAQ statement is also accurate. It does not say that if you replace a MIDI track with a RealTrack, the RealTrack will play what was on the MIDI track; it will completely replace the MIDI and generate a new part.

That's possible for those RealTracks with notation.

Is there an easy way to figure out which RealTracks have notation?

Yes. FAQ #168:

168. What are the green lines underneath some of the RealTracks at the top of the main screen? What do N and Gt stand for in the RealTracks window?

Green underlines underneath the track names at the top of the main Band-in-a-Box screen tell you if the RealTrack instrument assigned to that track has RealCharts. RealCharts means that the notation window will display full notation for that instrument.

A half underline means that it will display notation.

A full underline means that it will display notation, and will also display accurate guitar tab. For these RealTracks, you can look in the Guitar Fretboard window and see exactly how it was played on the guitar.

The "Assign RealTracks" window, which you get to by right-clicking on a track and selecting Add/Remove RealTracks, will also tell you if an instrument has RealCharts available. Underneath the 'Chart' column, N means that the instrument shows notation, and Gt means that it also shows accurate guitar tab.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
