I love BIAB printing feature, becuase it is the only software on market that can reliably print bars nicely aligned. However, when using triplets with blues where flats/sharps/naturals assignments can occur even in one beat, the final printout of triplet does not look apropriate, because BIAB prints individual components too close each other. Basically it overwrites once written notation (sharpts/flats/natural within triplet).

Any possibilities to receive a correction to the program. Change the way how triplets/sharps/flats are handled in BIAB. Solution is easy, more white space to triplets.

Thank you for your time!

I too had ambitions for BIAB, expecting to be able to create lead-sheets for all the jazz pieces I play, along with backing for practice and rehearsal and separate printouts for transposing instruments.

I also thought I might be able to use BIAB to enter transcriptions of solos I'd taken from recordings, so that I could practice them along with BIAB.

The reality is that BIAB is first-and-foremost an accompaniment-generator and not a music engraver, and I now use Lilypond to produce accurate lead-sheets presented the way I want them to look.

Here's the best I could do for "Sandu" using BIAB:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22831598/Sheet%20Music%20PDF/Sandu.pdf

And here's a Lilypond version:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22831598/Sheet%20Music%20PDF/Sandu%20%28concert%29.pdf

As well as the grace-notes, 16th note triplets and glissando marks in the Lilypond version, you'll notice that the lead-in bar takes up a quarter of the first line in the BIAB version, so that the second line starts with bar 4, but Lilypond allowed me to ensure that bars 5, 9 and 13 start their respective lines in the usual way - much easier for a poor reader like myself to follow.

I now realise that I haven't tried exporting the Lilypond version to MIDI and then importing it with BIAB, to see if that produces a more elegant result - I expect it would sound correct, but the representation on the BIAB lead-sheet screen wouldn't be much different.

Lilypond is not for the faint-hearted - it takes a while to learn, but is VERY powerful. It has the added advantage that it's in the public domain, available at no charge in Windows, Mac and Linux versions.

One workaround might be using printing options landscape.

There are also "Notation symbols" option. I hope that PGMusic programmers
could invent/add some "non breaking space" unprintable symbol after
a note. User could add such at will.
That would solve the triplet and 16th note "too close&overlapping" problem.

I don't think this approach would be feasible, B.

If I understand the process correctly, the melody parts you enter through the Notation Window in BIAB are actually stored as MIDI information in BIAB files, and the display of music on the screen is done by conversion of the MIDI data back into staff form. This means that BIAB can import MIDI files and play them back correctly, but that the subtleties of musical notation may be lost in the translation.

How about new note font setting in Notation Options?

Chord Font: 100%
Lyrics Font: 100%
Text Font: 100%
Title Font: 100%

NEW
Note Font: 70%

For Example user setting 70% smaller note font
may lead to situation that triplets can be printed
acceptable with sharps/flats/naturals.

Thank you for your time

Suggestions like this should be in the Wishlist forum plus there's tons of threads talking about notation and printing. Do a forum search, you may find some things you haven't tried yet.

I just found the Lilypond website Foxylady, it looks very cool. This is a great tip, you should put this in the Tips & Tricks forum especially since you're familiar with it, you could become our resident expert. As I just mentioned, lots of folks are constantly looking for lead sheet printing options without having to spend big bucks for Sibilious or Finale.

Not sure if this is relevant.....but aren't there some options that set the number of bars per line in the print menu? Just wondering if having fewer bars per line might allow the triplets to spread out some? Just a shot in the dark, FWIW.

Foxylady, I've been trying to download Lilypond for the last 20 minutes. It's locking up Firefox and IE is telling me it cannot be downloaded. I'm not seeing any contact info on the website except the user forum and I'm not ready to do the whole register user thing yet. Any ideas?

Bob,

I have just downloaded it from http://lilypond.org/. It's a 24 MB file and downloaded pretty quickly. Could it be antivirus software creating a problem?

If you can't get it, I'll put it into Dropbox and send you a link to download it.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. The file is lilypond-2.14.2-1.mingw.exe - it might be available elsewhere on the net.

I've been using the Linux version of Lilypond for the last couple of years, and have had no problems in downloading updates - as Noel hasn't had any difficulty, perhaps this is a temporary problem with the website.

I don't know if I want to volunteer as an expert (defined in the pre-PowerPoint era as "someone from far away with slides"), but I'd be happy to help anyone out.

There's a program called BIABConvert out there, which says it will convert BIAB files to LilyPond's format. It does this up to a point, but I found I needed to do a lot of editing afterwards, and ending up just typing in the parts.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
