I can no longer double click a .sgu file and have it open and load into BiaB. I was always able to do this before, but for some reason since I installed 2012 it no longer works.
Here's what happens:
I double click a song (.sgu) file in Windows Explorer and BiaB does open, but it neither loads the song nor the associated style. Instead it boots BiaB with a blank song and the zzjazz default style.
I'm sure there is a setting or something that I'm missing in the options/preferences, and I've looked a few times but I haven't found. Probably something that I've overlooked.
Thanks.

File, File Utilities, Associate File Types.
If that doesn't do it, check your setting in Opt., Preferences, At Program Bootup to Open Previous Song, and check the checkbox under it.

I've got the same problem, but I got a message saying that I couldn't associate file types in windows explorer. I haven't bothered to fix this yet, but thanks to Matt will give a try soon. THANKS MATT!

windows still has the file types associated with the old version of BIAB (to windows, they aren't the same program apparently)
if you remove the previous file associations then re-asociate the file extensions, it should work. You can do it all from BIAB's FILE menu as shown below:
file/ file utilities/remove file associations with windows/asociate file types with windows

In BBW, you can use the menu item - File - File Utilities - Create File Associations...

Thank you for that suggestion, Pat. I had the same problem, and since the file associations were still there, it did not occur to me to delete them and re-associate.
Notes may need to change his Startup Preference to "Do not open song or style". Otherwise, the previous song or style will reload on top of whatever you clicked on, obscuring the fact that you actually had it loaded for a second.
If you have selected the option to "Open previous song" you can see the name of the double-clicked song flash in the title area and then disappear as it is replaced automatically by the previously opened one. This was something that changed around Version 2010, and not for the better.

I had the same annoying problem but thought it was due to changes to Windows. Now I will try the suggested solutions. Okay, I tried the Matt and Peter solution but it does not work from the Windows 7 Libraries/Music area where I have my files stored. The file pops up in the BB Window but then drops out and reverts to the previous tune played. In addition, you cannot import a BB file from another website into the BB play area as the Open file just by clicking. You used to be able to do that also. Okay, I tried removing the old file associations from BB Files/File Utilities/remove file associations but the files still do not 'stick'. They pop up in the window and then drop out and revert to the previous tune played. Okay, I solved the problem for me, or rather allis did with his suggestion to change the Startup Preferences to "Do not open song or style". Now I will have to decide which setting saves me the most time.

Thanks everyone!
I removed the associations in the File->File Utilities menu. Then I re-associated them in the same menu and they are working again. Problem solved!
I'm working on demo songs for a couple of new style disks I hope to release by April. After getting a few good candidates for demo songs and listening to how my styles work with various chord progressions, I often tweak the styles to make them work better in the 'real world'.
I choose the songs out of my fake disk folders and I keep everything new out of the c:\bb folder until I'm done. So double-clicking a song or style is a lot easier than going through the open menu when dealing with a few different folders.
It's funny that previous to the fix the BiaB icon was on the files in WinExplorer, and double-clicking a file would open BiaB but neither load either the song nor the style that I double-clicked. Just a glitch I guess. Anyway removing and re-associating did the trick. My mouse finger thanks you.
Actually, it's my foot. I installed a footswitch, and have it set Rock Forward = Right Click and Rock Backwards = Ctrl. It saves a RSI problem. The button is programmable to whatever keystrokes I want.
Thanks again.

I've tried the above suggestions, but I get an error message in the yellow popup window saying that the registry cannot be written to because of the user account control being set to true. I must be missing something in the uac because I don't see/find a setting like that.
I am able to open a BIAB song file by right clicking on it and then clicking open with no problem so I do have the feature of opening a file without first opening the biab pgm file. I'm not sure why one works and the other doesn't. I'm using window 7 home premium and BIAB 2012 everything pack.

Whatever the problem is, it is not because of the folder locations you used.
[I'm guessing that Guido was referring to the known problem of UAC rights if you install your /BB folder in the /Program Files folder (either one, if using 64-bit OS) for Vista or Windows 7. PG Music has confirmed you should not do that.]

"UAC being set to true" simply means that your User Account Control is active, and is preventing Band in a Box from making this registry change.
You will likely need elevated privileges to make this change while you have UAC on. I have gotten this to work in the past by having the user simply opening Band in a Box with elevated privileges by right clicking your Band in a Box shortcut > "Run As Administrator", then try the [ File Utilities > Associate File Types ... ]
If double clicking songs from explorer is still not opening in BB at this point (quite rare in my experience), it may be necessary to try disabling User Account Control altogether to make the change stick.
HTH, Will

Thanks, all. To me, UAC is a royal p.i.t.a.. I'm the only one who uses this computer. I realize that Microsoft has to have user controls, but they could at least offer an option to turn it off for a single user. I know that I can disable it, but I'm not enough of a sophisticated user to make the appropriate adjustments in it to allow my internet security features to continue. I suppose that I can disconnect from the wifi and then make the above-suggested adjustments and then reconnect?

Thanks. I was able to run as administrator and it now works okay. Now I need to figure out how to get the uac shield off of the RB icon.

Windows 8 Developer Edition beta has been out for several months. What they released yesterday is the Windows 8 Consumer Preview beta, the next step toward the finished product.
The small initial download is valuable to anyone considering Windows 8, because it tests your hardware and software for compatibility. I discovered two updates to software I did not know about, plus an outdated printer driver.
ps BIAB 2012 is compatible.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
