I am a bit puzzled regarding program change commands in PTPA. In some of the midi files I've bought or downloaded from the www I see program change data in the event lists for the various channels. Other files show the pc (instrument setting) only at the beginning of the track window. My concern is being able to designate the desired Yamaha XG patch (pc) in PTPA and then be sure it will stay that way during playback. When I right click in the track window and open the “Patch Select Dialog” I can choose the XG variant I want. But since it does not shown up in the event list I'm not certain it will play properly from a flash drive through my Yamaha Tyros 2. Also, it seems that the program changes that appear in the event list are GM only with no way to designate any other “bank” of sounds. Should I delete the program changes that show up in the event list and depend on the “patch select dialog” as executed in the track window?
Thanks,
DVJ

No suggestions? Maybe I should rephrase the problem. I guess what I'm trying to understand is how to enter program changes beyond the basic GM voices such as the Yamaha XG set.
Thanks,

If you open the CLASSIC TRACKS window you'll see boxes for BANK and LSB as well as the PRG (program number) box. These extra boxes are used to access additional banks in keyboards such as Yamaha which have more than just the GM sounds.

Exactly how these are implemented changes between manufacturers and sometimes even between different models. Your keyboard manual should have some information on this, or you can just experiment.

If your downloaded file has a program change embedded, you may need to delete it using the EVENT window for the new information to work.

Hope this helps.

Go into PG support and download the .ini file for Yamaha XG and install a new patch map in RB. The PDF manual tells you exactly how.Now when you use the instrument assign dialo it'll not be just GM you'll also have your XG map as well and everything will be as you need it.

Hi,

I have the Tyros 4 and even after I assigned patch numbers on my tracks, the sequencer still play all notes in piano. I turn off/on the T4 but still all in piano. Any ideas please. Thanks DP

DP,
I ran into the same thing. That's when I started inserting program change commands into the "Event List" rather than depending on the track window. I'm still puzzled about this process. A lot of my tracks have program names and numbers showing in the track window and sound just fine but when I look at the event list there are absolutely no program change events showing.

The changes made using the Tracks window are stored in the SEQ file and work differently than when they are inserted into the Event List.

If the settings are stored in the seq file, they are applied when the file is opened, and depending on situation, maybe checked again later.

If they are entered in the Event list they get sent every time the file plays and the song gets to the point where the Event was inserted.

In other words, the Event list sends the message 'manually' when you want it to be sent, every time.
You could change the Track setting and when you hit Play the Event List entry (when triggered) will over-ride it.
That's why it's the preferred method here quite often.

Thanks rharv,
Most of the midi files I work with are downloaded as 0 or 1 type purchased or free standard midi files. After opening them in PTPA, I do my editing and save them as a type 1 smf. That means they are never in a seq file. Is that a potential problem in getting the PCs properly embeded (with bank changes beyond GM)? After editing the midi files and saving them to a flash drive I play them back on my Yamaha Tyros 2. In order to get the desired PCs with bank select designations beyond GM should I save first to a seq file then convert that to midi?

No need to save as seq file if you use the event list to write the changes.

Just go to 1-1-0 time point, enter a PC in the Event List and save it as .mid or whatever.
Hard writing the change in the Event List is the key. Then it gets saved in .MID and SMF files as MIDI data that will get transmitted every time the file is played.

For the record, when working on a song in PT you ARE in seq file format. I don't think you can avoid that. Whether you save it in that format is up to you, but that's what allows you to open a .mid file and record an audio track along with it; the transfer to seq file format. When you save it, if you can save it in .mid or SMF, but you lose some of the features you were using in SEQ format.

In other words, when you open any kind of file in PT it is converted to .seq format while working on it in PT (which sometimes includes more features like track-to-patch assignments and recording audio) .. but then you can save it to whatever format you want (which may include less features).

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
