i started playing around with Real Band, trying to get familiar with it..
I loaded a midi file & it loaded onto separate tracks just fine, Piano Melody onto track 4, guitar melody track 5, bass track 6, etc., etc.
I'm happy with that.. but when I bring the piano melody fader down, & bring the guitar fader up, I have the piano fader all the way down before it responds. Same with guitar fader, it's all the way up before the guitar responds. I would like the piano to start fading as I pull the fader down. It's hard to control track volumes this way.. If I add vocals I would like to control the piano to fill in the dead spots behind vocals..
What am I doing wrong, & how do I fix it.. I tried Asio & it's even worse.
On my Korg D3200 the faders respond immediately. I would like Real Band to be the same..

In Preferences Audio tab enable Quick Volume Change check box.

Or if it is enabled, uncheck it; some people find it works better one way than the other. Also there is a setting there for output buffer you could tinker with.

Before making any more suggestions, what is your sound source? Audio tracks?
Or MIDI with a VSTi, MSsynth, .. or ?
If MIDI, try sending the MIDI from Realband to that Korg. That should respond very quickly.

OHHH man, you sure know how to confuse me..lol... Sound source?? I just opened Real Band & opened a Midi File I found titled "Mansion On A Hill"..
I then want to play along with the Midi tracks, by adding an audio track to it, but when I'm playing I want to bring the melody piano down, & after my part is down, then bring guitar melody up..
It says I have Real Tek high definition audio..

OK, I went & changed to Quick volume change, some difference but not great.. I loaded the same Midi file into Mixcraft, & the volume changes as I pull on the fader or raise the fader.
Also tried Studio One Free, & volume changes are immediate.

In Real Band the volume reacts a lot slower when I work the faders.. I also tried Asio, & the music is delayed.. When I hit a piano key, there's a delay. But when I go back to MME & hit a piano key I get immediate sound..

I will try the same file in Reaper, & see the results..

Something else I just noticed. When I hit the Solo button there is quite a bit of latency before it responds..When I turn Solo off it takes time for the other tracks to start playing..

This is a clue, but a weird one. MME is not usually faster than ASIO. Guess I'd suspect the Realtek soundcard drivers.

The Solo button delay issue sounds like the buffer setting mentioned in my previous post. Lower the buffer for quicker response, but going too low can cause other problems, so note the working setting before changing.

Thanks for the help. I dropped the buffer from 2000 to 700. It is better, but still not right on.
What baffles me is that the other Daws work real well.

User Review Time:

You need to go to a real beefed up DAW like Reaper x64 if you have a 64 bit system to see major improvement.

BIAB works really well just about all the time.

However, Realband is not so well behaved in my opinion. I have been using it since it came out a few years back on 3-4 different high end systems and it never has performed as well as:

Reaper
Adobe Audition
Sonar

My friend just purchased BIAB 2014 and Realband which I installed in his 3.5 GHZ Win 8-1 x64 system with 8 MB of ram and the Scarlett 2i4 audio interface and Realband performed so bad I was somewhat embarrassed to run it for my friend as he is just getting into home recording.

The sliders were very slow to respond to volume and panning changes, usually 3-4 seconds after performing the change, we heard the results in the output.

Yes we are using all the latest stuff, ASIO drivers, Power settings, video drivers, USB drivers etc. Not my first rodeo by any means.

BIAB however really impressed him and he was truly amazed at what BIAB can do.

We then installed Reaper X64 as a DAW and he was amazed at the difference in performance.

I told him you have not seen anything yet. I powered up my laptop with Adobe Audition CS6 x64 and it outperformed Reaper x64.

Those are my thoughts after using Realband for a few years now.

Sometimes the truth hurts but it also will hopefully inspire PG Music to actually make a DAW that will perform as well as the other products out there now. You did absolutely fantastic with BIAB, however....

Realband sadly does not compare to the other alternatives available.

Thanks for your very candid reply.. I tried Reaper & what I don't like about Reaper is that when I import a MIDI file into, it has no sound, seems like I have to allocate or put in sounds, & I'm afraid I know nothing about VST' & Vsti, etc. Mixcraft will play as soon as I get a Midi file into it.

I'm running Windows 7, 32 bit.., I've never tried Adobe Audition or Sonar.
Which versions do you have? & do they have Trial periods?

I've been running PowerTracks (which is basically the same engine as RealBand) for years. Even on our old machine which has a Sempron 2.1 with 1meg RAM and XP Pro, using ASIO4ALL and the on-board Realtec audio, we get instant response from the faders. The response is the same even if we're pulling down 30 tracks and running several VSTi.

The only thing which can slow it down at all is having too many windows open at the same time. A lot of systems will prioritize graphics, so if you have a lot of hidden windows open it can quickly affect your audio response time.

I rebooted my computer, didn't open anything except Real Band.. I set my buffer to 500, & it works pretty good, best at 300. If I set the buffer at 2000 the latency is still there. I tried Asio, & the latency is real bad. I put it back to MME, & that's better.. What problems will I run into if I leave it at 500, or even lower at 300 ??

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
