Hi Folks,
Still having fun learning how all this works and loving it. I thought maybe I was just old and slow, but I see others are doing what I am. I have been reading a lot of your posts lately, and am gratified to see that I am not the only one who has to experiment with different things to see what works. Such complex programs can be temperamental at times.

One bug I may have uncovered in RB 2014: I have been unable to render a song to a stereo wave file using Garritan files. It works OK with Sample Tank and Coyote. The Garritan tracks turn out blank even though the exit message indicates that the process was successful.
Also, the Aria player is reset so that there are no instruments loaded! (Could be why there is nothing rendered?)

I am pretty certain that 2013 RB was good in this operation.

Tried all the standard things like rebooting, reloading, etc.

Any ideas? --Haven't talked to Support yet. (I used to work in a national support position and I first wanted to make sure it's not just me. )
( I don't think I have the very latest patch, but from the description, it doesn't fit.)

Jim smile

Trying to decipher your post for clarity.
You are able to play the song using Aria plugin (and Garriton files) and hear it, but when you render to stereo wave file it doesn't work?

'Audio-Merge Audio and DXi to Stereo Wavefile' would be the path that should work.

That's the one. It is the button on the top left of the screen. "'Audio-Merge Audio and DXi to Stereo Wavefile'"

Should I re install maybe?

Thanks

Hi Jim,

I have Garritan but have not yet used it with RB. I tried it out and all worked fine. What I did was ...

1. Loaded in the demo for a MIDI style (I used J_SLOBAL)

2. I then right-clicked on the Bass track and set Garritan as the track's VST/DXi.

3. I right-clicked on the MIDI track again, entered the configuration panel for Garritan and set it to play a bass on Channel 2.

4. I confirmed it was definitely playing by changing the sounds in Garritan.

5. Next I left-clicked on the bass MIDI track and used CTRL+A to select the entire track.

6. I then right-clicked and selected to convert MIDI to an Audio Track.

7. The wav was generated on Track 10. It needed normalizing, though. You see this by how small the wave-form (on the right of the image) is on the track.

8. To Normalize the wav, I clicked on it, used CTRL+A to select it. I then scrolled down the pop-up menu (#1), selected "Audio Effects" (#2) and then selected "Gain Change".

9. From the Gain Change menu, I used the drop-down arrow and selected "Normalize" (#1) and "Process" (#2).

10. The wav was modified to maximize its output.

Hope this helps,
Noel

I had a similar problem at one time using VSampler which did not render properly using an ASIO driver but would do so using the MME drivers. The effect with the ASIO was that the rendered file was blank although RB was happy.

I also had various other problems such as VSampler losing the patch selections and closing the VSTi. I found that if I saved a copy of VSampler setup, then the VSTi did not close and that it was possible to render correctly using the ASIO.

Hey all,
Thank you for the quick turn around. Getting other's inputs really gets the job done.

Noel, yes, I find that as a Workaround I can set up another track in RB and record while the Aria tracks are playing. Then it records a perfect stereo track.

Lyn, I tried using MME and you are spot on. It works for me as it did for you. So I guess ASIO is best used only when recording live into RB. I still don't understand why Sample Tank and Coyote are not affected by this, but there again; the complexity of the programs is probably the reason.

Thanks again. You guys are great.

Hi Jim,

I didn't setup another track and record to it.

I'm sorry. I mustn't have explained myself clearly enough. I rendered the VST/DXi directly to Track 10 using the "Convert MIDI to audio" option shown in Step 6 of my notes.

Also, I had ASIO4ALL as my driver.

Update ...

Just a couple of minutes ago, I went back to Step 6 in my earlier post and, this time, instead of selecting "Convert to MIDI to WAV" (#1), I chose the option directly above it and converted MIDI to a wav file (#2). All worked well.

Try as I might, I cannot duplicate the problem you're having. Everything works fine for me.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. Did you try working through my earlier post step by step to see if your problem persisted?

Clarifying that my process does not work for you would help narrow down the issue. It might be related to XP (I have Vista). That is a possibility and, if it is the case, it's something that PG Music would need to know about.

Hi Noel,
Yes, I tried your set up and it worked okay. There doesn't seem to be a problem with rendering to an individual track in Real Band. The problem is in generating a stereo audio file (wav) on the hard disk or desktop. (as opposed to RB)

Turns out that almost everything works except that. Sorry if I confused you - I'm fighting a rather heavy case of bronchitis
the last couple of days and am not always thinking straight.

I believe I will drop a line to Support and let them know. There are plenty of workarounds for this one however.

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis. That would make everything pretty difficult.

Are you saying that when you try the process using option #1 in the below image, all works fine. When you go through the same process using option #2 in the below image, though, it doesn't work? (For what it's worth, option #2 created a stereo wav file on my hard drive.)

Alternatively, are you rendering to stereo wav in some other way? If so, could you please tell me which command, and where to find it, and I'll try it.

Regards,
Noel

Sorry for the delay in answering. Bronch getting the best of me.

AS far as my render problem...it seems to be ONLY Rendering ALL tracks to a Stereo file with Garritan VST in RB. The resulting Stereo WAV file is blank.

Using Sampletank vst on the other hand is OK.

Rendersing to individual tracks is okay.

Anyway, I wonder if others are having the same problem.

The Render button in upper left corner > and use "Merge Audio and DXi tracks to Stereo Wave File"

I just noticed something while trying to rebuild my system (due to a failure a couple of months ago @#$@&&!!) I had laid down a couple of tracks with BIAB and Sampletank and loaded them into RB. The ONLY way I could make 'merge all tracks' work with all the tracks was to select them all first. Then everything works great!

I guess I just missed that idea before. I haven't tried to reload Garritan yet. I'm still trying to evaluate Win 7 and trying to see if I maybe should just go back to XP. I miss it. ASIO has real consistency issues on Win 7.

Cheers

Garritan libraries use the mod wheel to control volume, so you may need to insert a CC1 command before your Garritan instruments start to play, otherwise you may end up with a volume of zero (or silence, if you will).

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
