I would greatly appreciate receiving information that could help me find style(s) that "fit" certain types of tunes, and in come cases, specific tunes. Hard to identify which style will fit a specific "old time" tune. Ethnic is also too broad a classification.

I have been using the search feature in the Styles option. Not much luck. Maybe my imagination isn't good enough. Realtracks can be suggested or any of the styles that come with BIAB. I sometime find a style that sounds right, but when used with the tune, doesn't sound "right".

Here are some styles I am searching for -

1. Ragtime - Red Apple Rag, Smith's Reel, Stone's Rag.

2. Polkas - Champagne Polka, Clarinet Polka, lots of Irish polkas.

3. Tunes like Angelina Baker and Cuckoos Nest.

4. Irish 6/8 jigs, hornpipes, reels. And as I mentioned earlier, Irish polkas. Hopefully, the rhythm track will include instruments played in Irish jams. Acoustic guitars tuned in the same manner as guitarists I hear in Irish jams. Nothing electric. I can mute them out with the mixer, but I would rather hear an instrument that is more appropriate for the music.

I just bought a "bluegrass" realtrack. It is flexible and works with a lot of tunes I don't consider bluegrass.

Like many fiddlers, I don't play a wide range of music. I just bought BIAB 2014 and enjoy using the mixer.

I too find it difficult to get the same phrasing I hear in my head from a single style or one generation of a BIAB instrument. There are several approaches I have learned and likely more that some of the more experienced folks here can suggest, but to name a few,
Import your track into real band and generate additional tracks as well as use the create multi-riff feature which also works to generate a portion of a track as well as regenerate a complete track.

If you have a DAW (digital work station) you can import several tracks and cut/splice individual pieces from the various tracks to create your own unique track.

Hope these help

Regards,
Charlie

I've asked frequently for biab to improve on the 6/8 ( jigs ) tempo. The Irish / celtic / Cape Breton styles jigs are way too busy and need simplified. It's possible to use various styles for Irish music. Western Swing for example. You could use just piano, bass & drums. Dixieland piano would work beautifully with ragtime. Of course there's the jazz stride piano as well. For clarinet polka try using CHETCMP.STY. Change mandolin to Cape Breton reel and have the tempo around 90.
One of the tricks I learned was that for a good Celtic / Scottish drum backing especially on reels/ polkas & 4/4 marches, try using tango real drums. Speeded up they're super for our needs !

Thanks for the information. I have used BIAB for a long time, and just bought BIAB 2014 to replace BIAB 2007. I had an even older version.

I wish PGMusic had an Irish rhythm Realset. In addition, the backup instruments would be those normally played in a set. I listen to the BIAB samples and they don't seem to be what I want. In the "onlinevideolessons" website, Ian Walsh plays one tune with a live rhythm guitar player. That guitar is tuned right and sounds great with a fiddle.

Years ago, when I first bought BIAB,I downloaded a bunch of styles from a Canadian named Alfie's website. Over the years, I used his styles more than the styles that came with BIAB. His BIAB files taught me how to build decent sounding files for double jigs.

Thanks for the Advice

The guy is probably Alf Warnock originally from Glasgow. I've used his styles a lot myself.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
