I would be oh so happy if I could figure out how to hear the output either when playing a note on my midi controller, or drawing a note in the piano roll view, or clicking on the vertical keyboard in the piano roll view. I haven't tried the notation view yet as that would really slow me down even more.

Backing up a bit, I laid out a song in BiaB using real tracks and real drums, then opened and saved in RB as a .SEQ file so I could really have some fun with it.

For this particular song I suppose it doesn't matter what notes I play because I'm only laying in a simple melody so I can put in lyrics. But I'm not sure why I can't set up RB to behave the same way as Sonar

I use an Oxygen 49 Midi Controller and set it up as follows:

Select Oxygen 49 as the INPUT driver but do not select for OUTPUT otherwise you will get continuing echoes as the Midi data is circulated around the system.

I Always use Channel 1 in both the Controller and for the appropriate RB Track. It is easy to change the Channel number in RB.

Set up the Midi Controller to select the same Patch number as shown for the RB Track.

Recording is easy - just set up the track as above and select REC icon.

Lastly use an ASIO driver to reduce any latency

Hope this helps.

Interestingly after my last post, I experimented with certain settings and found that at the start of any session using the Oxygen 49, whatever the settings in the Controller or RB, I always obtained the default Piano Patch 1 to start with.

Previously, I followed my routine as above to get started. Now, I can open the RB Classic Tracks Window, select the Program number for a track, click to open The Patch Window, select the patch and select "OK" to close the Window to set up the connection. This sometimes works for other tracks without the need for an additional Set Up. I am using a Ketron SD2 as the synth and this seems to wake it up with no need to adjust the Midi Controller.

I have used the "Wake Up" method for sleepy synths in the past.

I used to have one of those little laptop-sized Oxygen controllers but I traded it away in a fit of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) for something or other. It had more smarts than the Fatar I am using now which only has midi out and thru(no usb).
I'm setting up to run my Roland GR-20 but there are no instrument definitions for it in the PG Music help file. Those would be a big help. GR20 has some really good patches in there, especially the ones that layer a solo instrument with a string pad.

I suppose I could make my own in RB by cloning the midi track and setting the output from 1 to a guitar patch and the other to slow strings or a synth or synth brass patch.

Been doing some digging around for the .ins file for the Roland GR20. The forum will not allow me to include a .TXT or an .INS file. Click on my forum name and send me a PM with your email and I will forward it to you.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
