Just curious to know how you copy and paste a section from one tune to another in BIAB. The way I do it is to use the piano roll, drag the cursor to highlight the section I want, Ctrl-C, open second tune, piano roll, find the bar to begin insertion, and paste (Ctrl-V). I believe I original got this from PGM many years ago. How about you?
Cheers,
Bob

The method below was discussed a few years ago on the forum and copied verbatim. It works, but as Mac points out, the settings have to be very accurate; so you've got to know before pasting what the lowest and highest note values are. Exact beat count is also important. Very clunky. Percy Quote: First Method - Copy and paste notation into song 2. This doesn't copy lyrics
In Song 1, open the Notation Window (Melody track), and toggle into editable notation mode by pressing the [N] button.
Find the start of the section that you want to copy and highlight a small region (it doesn't matter how much) starting at that location.
Hold down the shift key on your keyboard, and click on the end of the section that you want to copy. This will highlight the section (Note: in Band-in-a-Box 2004 and earlier you need to click and drag to highlight a region of the Notation Window).
Go to Edit | Copy, make sure that the settings in the Copy dialog are correct, and press OK.
Load Song 2, open the notation window, and position yourself at the location you want to start pasting at.
Go to Edit | Paste, make sure the settings in the Paste dialog are correct, and press OK.

BIAB only lets you have one file open at a time, so just to get to the second file means saving the first and opening the second. That does not allow you to move information freely between the two.
I think it would be a good idea for the wishlist to allow multiple files open at the same time and allow easy copy/paste between the different elements.
You can copy the chord grid between files using the paste buffer, but I've not found a way to copy melody/soloist tracks between files using the paste buffer.
Generally, what I'll do is to save the current file as MIDI, open the second file, and then import the MIDI into the melody or soloist track (channel 4 for the melody; channel 8 for the soloist part).

Does this allow you to do it? - Just curious Ian

Don't know, Ian. I'll have to try it. I'd forgotten about that feature, as I generally only keep one open.
I'll let you know.

Okay, I gave it a quick try, but couldn't really figure out how to copy/paste between the two instances.
The copy from/to dialog is based on the current file, since you have to specify source and destination in the same screen.
Also, if you run multiple instances, you're going to get ASIO errors (if using ASIO), just like trying to run BIAB and RealBand at the same time with ASIO.

Yes, I didn't answer with that suggestion because I recall we discussed it and tried to copy between programs. Actually, I'm not sure why (if copying between doesn't work) one would want to have multiple instances of BIAB open, for at least the reason John gave. Does anyone here have a good use for multiple instances?

I think better than multiple instances, as I alluded to, would be to allow multiple files within the same instance to be open at the same time (just like Microsoft Word or just about any other program you run on a PC). That would, in theory, allow for moving data easily between each file.

Real Band wins again! I was about to jump in to say use RB for this. I keep telling noob's who never bother to open RB, to learn it along with Biab but they think Biab is all they need.

@jazzmammal: I have to say I'm one who has never spent much time with Real Band. However, each and every time I encounter a problem, it seems Real Band is the simplest and easiest fix. So, I guess it's high time I learn Real Band.
And, thanks to everyone who offered advice.
Bob

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
