BIAB 2015 (417) Win 7, using MIDI:
I have a melody line on the Soloist track of a file that I want to copy over to the Soloist track of a similar BIAB file (different chords) that I have opened in a separate instance. I'll call them "A" (source) and "B" (destination).

According to my Live Help session yesterday, I should be able to use the Piano Roll mode, and simply copy and paste.
I can't get that to work (and Tech Support isn't open today).

Here's my process:
- Open the song in Piano Roll mode in A and display the bars containing all the notes I wish to copy
- Using the left mouse button and the "bullseye" cursor, I click and drag a box around all the notes, turning them red
- Using the dropdown edit menu, I select Copy (I've also tried using Ctrl C, same result)
- The note data SHOULD now be on the Windows clipboard
- I move the cursor to B, which is already open in Piano Roll mode at the required location
- I move the bullseye cursor up to the "Note Time Ruler" so that it turns into a finger-pointing hand, and left click where I want the copied notes to start
- That places a green "I Beam" into Note Time Ruler
- Using the dropdown edit menu, I select Paste (I've also tried using Ctrl V, same result) - nothing happens
- If instead, I right click in B anywhere in the Piano Roll window, the resulting menu box shows both "Paste-Replace" and "Paste-Merge" as greyed out/unavailable

Any suggestions?
Help!
Thanks.

Hi Lloyd,

I've just tried the following in BIAB 2015 and it worked perfectly (and copied midi melody and lyrics).

1. Drag the Soloist track to the "MID" quadrant of the Dropbox

This will create a midi file of the Soloist track. First the quadrant will be orange (as above) and, when the process is finished, it will be green.

2. Open your second BIAB file.

3. Under the "Melody" menu (#1 below), navigate to "Import Melody From Midi File".

4. Go to the bb\DragDrop folder and look for the file called...

SONGNAME BBSoloist_MIDI (some descriptive style/midi words here)_0.MID

5. Select the file.

Leave all midi channels selected because the midi file will only contain a single channel and that's the one that will load in.

6. Select.

The file should now be loaded onto the Melody track.

If you want the file loaded into Soloist, simply follow the above procedure except via the Soloist menu on the uppermost menu bar.

Regards,
Noel

Noel:

I followed your instructions to the letter, but no luck. It "says" MIDI file imported successfully 206 MIDI events, but there's no sign of them on either the "Soloist" or the "Melody" track.

The notes I'm trying to copy are on a track called "New Age" because the patch is called "89 Pad-New Age" so there's no actual "Melody" not "Soloist" buttons to drag, but I did drag the one that said "New Age" to the MID section.

Perhaps I'll do a sample test from a brand new file (or a BIAB sample file) and see if I can get it to work from there. I'll report back with my progress.

Thanks for your help!

Lloyd,

It worked for me.

Have you tried setting the track type to 16 channel (this setting is to the right of #1 in the image in the above post)?

Also, did you play the file to see if you could hear the melody? It might be there, just not visible.

Just a thought.

Noel

It might be on another track that you can copy to the "Soloist" or Melody" track.
Can you open the other SGU in Realband then you can SEE all the tracks,
you can just drag the midi exported from BB straight into to Realband then "save as" a BB file selecting the the "Soloist" & "Melody" track in the popup.

I tried a sample BIAB file and it worked fine.
Going back to my original files.
Will report back.

Thanks!

Noel / solidrock:

I managed to get it to work the way Noel explained it. It may have had something to do with the "16 channel" setting, I'm not sure as I had changed some other settings.

But at least I know the "process" works so I'll keep playing with it until
- I know how to use it
- I get all the notes I want copied, into the new file

Thanks so much for your help!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
