I bought BIAB 2016 in December. I loved the demos and thought the real tracks would be great to write and record with. Since then I have learned that pushes don't work too well. When I called PG, I was told they work in some styles and not in others. Does anyone have a list of the ones that don't work or the ones that do? No pushes makes for a dull song.

So I thought perhaps I could change the drums to midi and use a Hi-Q patch. That way I could use notation or piano roll to get pushes. Then I would record audio bass and guitars on top of that. No good on that either. I can't find Hi-Q patches for drums. And, when I get a midi patch for the drums, all I hear is cymbals.

I tried starting with a midi style and adding a couple of real instruments. No go there either.

I watched the videos. None of that worked. Frustrating.

So here is what I am looking for. I want to be able to make tracks that have some pushes and have some real tracks or high-quality drums. Anyone have any suggestions? Anybody else having these problems with 2016?

Thanks.

Hi.

What level of experience do you have with BIAB? (I notice that you first joined the forum in 2011 but only refer to BIAB 2016.) Knowing this will help avoid covering material you are already aware of.

Regards,
Noel

2BSolo, as far as I know, no such list exists.

Before you give up on Pushes, there are things to try. As Noel commented, we don't want to post a lot of info you already know. But quickly, are you aware you can go to Preferences, RealTracks and adjust the Push Velocity? It helps me to lower it.

It would also help if you could clarify what you mean by "pushes don't work too well". What is it you don't like? We might have a solution or workaround.

Thanks for the reply. You folks are very considerate to help.

OK, here's what I mean by pushes don't work. I type them in but the drums (and everything else) still come in on the 1 beat instead of the and before the 1 beat. When I called PG to ask about it, their words were pushes work on some styles, not on others.

I checked the velocity of the pushes on Real Drums and found it was zero. So I increased it and that didn't help.I decreased it, didn't help.

I increased it on Real Tracks and it worked somewhat but in a way that didn't sound like a push. It was strange.

As far as my experience, I worked with midi tracks all the time before I got 2016. I did it enough to put together a one our show of standards. I worked with the notation and the piano roll to make changes when I needed to. I even found a way to save them, something I was told I couldn't do.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. I really would prefer to use mostly Real Tracks and Real Drums. If I can't, I am going to have to figure out the answers about using midi and possibly buy more software that has better patches.

Thanks again.

I've used pushes in the past, but to be honest, I was never too thrilled with the results. It always seemed to make the music sound chunky. The best results I found was to push the instruments and keep the drums without any pushes. Most songs that I do don't need pushes, so I don't use that function very often. If you can find a way to do it with RealDrums, I think you'll be happier. I've used midi drums a lot in the past, but they don't compare to the sound of RealDrums (especially in the cymbal parts).

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
