I'm confused about how the StyleMaker works with songs in 3/4. I want to play 2 different basslines, 1 for chords that remain unchanged for 2 bars (6 beats) and another for chords that change every bar (3 beats). Since the StyleMaker presents different patterns for 8, 4, 2, 1, and ending bars, how would I make this happen? I've tried different bass patterns in 8 vs 4 vs 2 but can't seem to get this working.

Thanks!

If you can elaborate a little, maybe I could help. I have only edited styles that are composed of all RealDrums and RealTracks and used the StyleMaker function to create my own custom styles. Are you creating Custom Styles?

Are you trying to use the "Style Picker" to select a STYLE for a 3/4 song? Then use that style to accomplish what you described in your post?

I'm creating my own style from scratch...but not with RealDrums/RealTracks, just the original style design. Your suggestion of loading a predefined style in 3/4 and using StyleMaker to tear it apart and see how it works is probably a great idea and will be my next move wink

So the commands for this procedure, after you have created a style in a song, by altering instruments etc. Go>file>StyleMaker>Save Current Song except muted channels as style. Name the style so you can recognize it, I usually put my initials DA at the beginning of my custom styles.

Hi WytchCrypt,

Welcome to the forums.

If you're using the midi side of Stylemaker, have a look at the 37 minute video especially about Stylemaker at the following link.

http://www.pgmusic.com/videos.bbwin.htm

It's found in the "Advanced" section.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I'm assuming that you have the Windows version of the program.

I have created many Midi styles and have always started with a 'known' style and modified it to my own liking. It saves having to do all the fiddly stuff.

One of the simplest ways of doing that is to import an instrument (pattern) that you like from one style to the style you are building. They don't even have to be the same number of beats per bar, or even the same genre. All of that is defined in your style.

So if you like a finger picking country guitar in an even country style you can copy it to a jazz waltz.

I prefer to edit an existing style and then rename it, but there are many ways to start. select STYLES> STYLE MAKER>EDIT CURRENT STYLE. (or click the Top Hat icon on the tool bar)

The from the menu bar on the new window select Import Instrument from style.

The radio button for the instrument will show you the A and B patterns. Don't worry too much about the numbers, but click the box with the note. It will show you the notes that will be played. These are the patterns. The A and B patterns may be the same, or one may be missing. This is how you make the instrument play what you want.

It's a bit of a learning curve, but it can be very satisfying. You van adjust velocities, note lengths, as well, of course as the voice. For instance you may import a piano and make it a Vibe in your style.

I found it best if you try import from a style that is close to the one you are trying to make in genre, tempo, etc., as BIAB has done a lot of work to make that instrument sound good in the style. Moving it away from it's original format may not always work

Have fun

So just completed the StyleMaker video and while I learned a lot of cool stuff, it unfortunately doesn't cover anything about how the 3/4 time signature translates into the 8-4-2-1 beat pattern layout. It's a great guide on how to create styles in 4/4 though wink

I'm off to load up some 12/8 styles and study how it works with those.

I think I'd call PG on this. Logically 3/4 timing would not have 8,4,2. More like 9,6,3. If they are not available, call and see if you can get some help.

Studied some existing 3/4 styles and got nowhere so sent an email to PG support. Will report back with the solution later ;-)

From the BIAB PDF documentation

Waltz?

If you want to make a waltz with the StyleMaker, check the “Waltz?” checkbox in the Misc. Style Settings dialog.
Then the StyleMaker will record, and play patterns in 3/4 time. The “8 beat row” will record “6 beat” (2 bar patterns), the “4 beat” will record 3 beat (1 bar) patterns. The “2 beat” and “1 beat” still record 2 and 1 beat patterns.
The new style is made as a waltz, and will play with a 3/4 lead in. There is no need to put a 3/4 time signature change in bar 1.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
