Hi team,

I want to add a few Real Track solos to a song. The song is 150 bars and I want a trombone solo at bar 41 for 16 bars and a trumpet solo at 73 for 16 bars. The dialog boxes are unclear as to how to add these. I managed to get them in there at one point using the Custom option button, but ended up with 4 solos instead of 2. I couldn't find out how to delete the extra 2 solos. The videos are totally dated and the PDF is completely useless, unless I'm missing something.

Along these same lines, is there a way to have a track play for a certain bar range? In other words can you turn a track on or off where you want? That would be a really nice feature. Thanks.

Gear: Tyros 5, MOX8, SoundCraft EFX12 mixer, two Bose L1 Compacts, Yamaha HS-8 monitors, BIAB 2016 UltraPlusPAK, Cubase 8, Steinberg UR-44 interface.

I'd use RealBand for this. It works about the same as BIAB does in this case, but it is a little more comfortable to create a solo for the fraction of a song.

If you don't know how, just ask.

To do this, right-click on the chord sheet at the bar you want to mute the track(s) and then select Bar Settings. Bar Settings will allow you to bring sounds in and out of a mix.

Also...

I agree with the above that Realband is much more versatile when creating a solo. That solo can then be brought into BIAB as a Performance file.

When I get home from work tonight, I'll go through how I use the Soloist. IT might offer some insight.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks guys!

Never thought about RealBand. It makes sense.

GHinCH-good advice. Seems like it worked smile. The documentation still needs an overhaul.

You're welcome. I'm happy when it worked.

What I like when using RB is that I can start the solo one or two beats early and end it one or two beats late and kind-a fade in and fade out. So I have a small overlap.

RB seems to be more eager to re-generate than BIAB. When I have a version I like, I render it to a wav file. I can use that for the final version -- as long as I don't change the chord progression substantially.

Don't understand this statement. RB is LESS eager to regen, that's one of the main reasons for using it. Unless you're working with the blue Biab tracks. The first thing you should do after you open a Biab song in RB is change the Biab tracks to regular tracks. RB won't regen anything that you don't have highlighted.

First, start with a RealTrack assigned to your track. If you want to start out with silence, choose the RealTrack called silence (#1152).

There are a couple of options. One easy way to alternate soloists is to use the Medley feature in the RealTracks Picker, although this limits you to switching soloists every "x" number of bars/choruses etc.

The other option is to use Bar changes (Bar Settings dialog). Press F5 at the bar you want to switch at, and then press the RealTracks button.

You are right for any user with experience in RB. But if you have never worked with RB in this way and you work on a project without the comfort of having time to learn, then you could appreciate this statement as a helpful hint that being careful might pay off.

On the other hand your post offers some helpful advice for the novice RB user.

Wow, many thanks Andrew! That might be exactly what I'm looking for. I would have never found that.

It's one thing to have accurate information in a document. The other important thing is, "Can users find it?" You just bridged the gap my friend.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
