Hi guys

I'm thinking about buying BiaB - I'll be a complete beginner with this type of software.

Does it work OK with Windows 10? The site isn't entirely clear about that.

Cheers
Kim

Kim,

Welcome to the forums.

There are lots of users on here who have Win 10 as their operating system. Band In A Box works fine.

Regards,
Noel

I upgraded to Win10 last month and BiaB works perfectly with Win10.

The software is very beginner friendly, but because there are tons of useful features, it might seem confusing at first. But don't worry, this is a very friendly, helpful forum with plenty of enthusiastic contributors who are eager to help newbies, and the PG Music support department is one of the best I've seen.

If you love making music, go for it, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks Bob, very reassuring.

I was searching for software to make backing tracks, and it was your website that pointed me in the direction of BiaB!

Kim, welcome aboard!

I bought BIAB 2016 for making backing tracks too. The last version I used was the original DOS version from centuries ago smile! I use Windows 10 and find BIAB very robust. As with any music software, you need to make sure you have adequate RAM and a good quality sound interface. Other than that, you should be good to go. If you're in doubt, please post your system details.

"Notes" is 100 percent correct. There are folks on this forum who will walk you through the most basic startup procedures right through to the funky and fancy stuff. Dr. Peter Gannon's team are stellar as well, when it comes to product support, updates, and bug fixes. If we could only get Dr. Peter to buy out Microsoft, users would experience real customer satisfaction and quality software - but I digress.

Drive on and make music. Let us know if you get stuck. Best...

- Lee

As you seem to have read on my website http://www.nortonmusic.com/backing_tracks.html I make backing tracks with the help of BiaB.

I'm in a duo http://www.s-cats.com and we've been gigging since 1985 in the same area.

I've seen other duos use purchased tracks (Karaoke and the like) but I find audio tracks not as good for a few reasons. Here are some of them:
  1. Sometimes while transposing to your vocal key they get those weird artifacts
  2. You cannot completely control the arrangement, lengthen it, extend solos, add kicks, etc.
  3. They have someone else's solos on them
  4. Background singers on the track shout Karaoke to the audience
  5. Fade out endings
  6. BALANCE: Audio tracks usually come compressed, which for live performance is a no-no. In fact, for live the dynamics should be exaggerated. When you hear a live pop, rock, country, EDM band, the snare drum on the backbeat is usually quite loud, this drives the audience with energy. In an audio track, a snare that loud would sound odd. In BiaB, especially if you have MIDI drums, you can really accent the snare and/or any other parts that need to jump out of the mix for live performance.

With BiaB you can overcome all these problems. Of course there is a downside. BiaB tracks are rather generic, but if you have any input skills at all, you can add the song specific parts BiaB tracks may lack.

While every way to make backing tracks has its pros and cons, I think using BiaB and a DAW (Like Power Tracks or Real Band) and a little bit of work, you can make outstanding backing tracks that sound better than your competition.

And we've been gigging in the same area for 30 years so we must be doing something right.

After my Win 10 upgrade nightmare I described in the other thread I have Win 10 now and installed Biab two days ago. I put everything including all the RT/RD's on the SSD. I simply picked a demo song and it played perfectly. For now I'm just using the basic Wavetable for midi because I haven't installed ST3 or JBridge yet but that's next.

Don't worry, everybody says there's no problem and so far for me that's true.

As far as me using Win 10 for my normal non music stuff it's absolutely seamless. Zero learning curve other than "discovering" you have to right click on the Windows icon in the far left of the taskbar to access the Start menu.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
