I have 2017 Ultra pak running on a Win 10, 64 bit OS.
I also have an RME Babyface audio card.
I have sound from everything but BIAB. (Cubase, mps3's, Kontakt VST's, VST amp sims, etc,

There is something not right in the Options>MIDI/Audio Driver setup...that I haven't got right.
Figuring that maybe it was just my MIDI setup...I loaded a song with nothing but RealTracks, but still nothing.
Sorry, I am getting some sound, but it's the Drum Track and a NEW Age instrument in the song that I've loaded.
However in the Mixer window (all Green tracks) the Bass, Guitar 1, Drums, Guitar 2, Guitar 3 are showing no activity in the mixer.
But, the Yellow New Age is showing activity and again I hear the drums, but there is nothing in the Drum mixer showing movement.

Please let me know what other info you may need to guide me through my setup.

Thank you,

Paul Keyes

Paul,

Can you please take a screenshot of "Preferences | Midi Driver" and post it here so we can see what's happening. Below is an image of the setup I'm asking about. (The post below this one gives information on how to post an image.)

Now show us your Audio driver settings .. how you are routing the synth through the audio may yield a clue.

Thanks Paul. That helps heaps.

I suspect the problem is because you have BIAB set to use an ASIO driver. ASIO is often a one-trick pony and if you have another music application open that's using ASIO, it can take precedence and stop BIAB from working.

At the end of the day, having ASIO as your driver in BIAB may not be needed. (Let's cross that bridge later if it arises.) For the moment, the aim is to get your system working.

Click on the "Audio Settings (ASIO Always)" button at the bottom of the setup window you posted and change your audio driver to MME. OK your way back to the chordsheet.

Does that help?

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I see rharv was typing at the same time as me.... we seem to be thinking the same thing.

thanks for your help!

Actually it was originally set at MME and that is what prompted me to set to ASIO to lower the latency. (and maybe help me get my sound back)
So, ASIO or MME gets me the same result.

I also clicked on Options>Return to Factory Settings and still the same sounds.

Thanks for your help.

I'll buy you a case of beer or a bottle of your favorite Bourbon or Scotch if you can figure this one out.

Paul,

Sometimes Windows can cause unknown problems. To eliminate these possibilities, it's worthwhile fully shutting down one's computer and restarting periodically.

Prior to doing that...

1. Close BIAB.

2. Go to your \bb folder and rename "intrface.bbw" and "mysetup.dk" to "intrface.bbw.old" and "mysetup.dk.old"..... this is the ultimate version of "return to factory settings". (Note the spelling of "intrface.bbw" - no 'e'.)

3. Fully shutdown and restart computer.

When you next open BIAB you will be prompted to setup drivers. Choose MME.

Any joy yet?

Regards,
Noel

I've uploaded the Audio Drivers setup maybe there is something there.

The next very odd problem is when you mentioned to go to the bb folder and rename those files...I don't have the files or the folders. Are they, "Hidden"?

When I installed BIAB I placed the bb folder on my C: Drive and all of my Real Tracks and Drums on a separate Hard Drive. Every update that I have applied in the last 3 weeks has recognized where my bb folder is and also my Drums and Real Tracks. So, I'm guessing that all is okay. But, it's not looking good that I could not find the, "intrface.bbw" and "mysetup.dk", files that you mentioned.

Anything in my Audio Drivers setup look strange?

Paul

Paul,

The files are not hidden. Did you try the windows 'Search' function to locate them? They are there somewhere for sure.

As a doublecheck, your \bb folder is not in "Program Files" is it? It can create problems if it's located there.

Also, nothing looks out of place in your audio setup that I can see.

Have you checked that the Windows volumes are up and not muted? See the two images below. IMAGE 1 is obtained by right-clicking on the speaker icon and selecting "Playback | Speakers | Properties". IMAGE 2 is obtained by left-clicking on the speaker icon and selecting "Mixer".

Hello Noel96,

Yes, I have, "bb" located on the C: Drive in it's own folder. (Not in Programs, Programs (x86), or Documents etc.,)

Yes my volume levels are fine. All other programs are working fine.
soundcloud, amp Sims, Cubase, EZDrummer, etc.,

I think that I'll just do a complete re-install.

Other than when I start-up BIAB and selecting MME is there anything else that I need to do to get a complete uninstall?
I will continue to place my, "bb" folder on the C: Drive, but I prefer to have all of the Real Tracks and Drums on another larger Hard Drive.
Anything to be careful of on the install?

Thanks again for all of your help.

Paul,

If I were reinstalling, I'd approach it the following way. (Since you are not putting the Realtracks on the c: drive, you should have space to accommodate this.... it's the Realtracks that take up all the space.)

1. Rename the present \bb directory to something like "\bb_old".

2. This will then allow a completely new reinstall to c:\bb.

3. If BIAB runs fine after the install, simply delete c:\bb_old.

As you mention, MME is the best sound driver to select. It sounds like you have it all under control.

Regards,
Noel

Paul,

I know next to nothing about computer audio protocols, but nonetheless...

-Here's something to easily check: As hinted above, if any other program is loaded and is using ASIO (without the multiclient wrapper) BIAB with ASIO will not sound out ("...ASIO is often a one-trick pony and if you have another music application open that's using ASIO, it can take precedence and stop BIAB from working.) The suggestion was to switch to MME in BIAB.

What is also true is BIAB will not work with MME either, if another program is using ASIO audio, so if that is the case switching to MME will get identical null results. I verified this by using Real Band with ASIO (not multiclient); BIAB would not work with MME, and neither would Windows sound effects, PG's Metronome, etc.

So, be sure you are not running another program with ASIO - check with Task Manager, or verify you're getting windows sound effects, etc.

It seems you have other programs running from time to time, so maybe one is started, minimized, and forgotten. Unless you've got a weird startup group, the suggestion to reboot and go into BIAB first would seem to work also.

Another way of checking the audio output is bypass the mixer and loaded songs. Go to the stylepicker, and audition a real track style within that module. This would seem to bypass muting, track selection, and all that sort of complication.

Another thought - I checked my MME settings (which work when invoked) and compared them to yours (which don't work at this time).

A solution to get something going might be driver juggling. Instead of using the audio input from RME Babyface, maybe you should try keeping it in the family and using Microsoft Sound mapper as both in and out drivers. Although I don't use the MME drivers normally, that pair works on my system as of 3 minutes ago.

Usually I don't reply to posts, but your trouble reminds me of me, about once a year, and I can't help but look at the car wreck that I had too.

The saga continues...
I did a complete reinstall and I still have the same problem. (Nothing else is loaded...as I did a shutdown of the computer and only then did I do the reinstall.)

I'm well aware of ASIO having trouble releasing itself to another program.

What is also very odd...I upgraded from BIAB 2014 and it was running beautiful. I figured that it was time to upgrade to the new and improved BIAB 2017.

I might try a complete Uninstall and try running BIAB from the USB.

Maybe a fresh start in the morning will give me the stamina to tackle this problem and find a solution.

I'LL let you know how I make out.

I thank all of you for you suggestions.

Paul,

Have you tried loading different styles?

If you want to test run starting BIAB from the USB drive, go to \bb on the USB drive, find BBW.EXE and double-click on that.

One other thought just occurred to me.... Have you correctly told BIAB where to find the Realtracks? To do this, it's necessary to set the path in "Preferences | Realtracks". See #3 on the image. The p:\bb\Realtracks is the USB drive where I keep my Realtracks even though I run the main part of the program from my computer's hard drive. (I have the audiophile version of the software but the principle will be the same for you.)

There is a similar setting under "Preferences | Realdrums" (#5), too.

If none of the above work, it's time to contact PG Music. Kent would be a good person to ask for if he's available. With your permission, PG Music can remotely access your computer using a program such as Teamviewer. This makes problem solving much, much easier.

Regards,
Noel

Just to be clear, this is Not true, crazy I run Reaper with ASIO and BIAB with MME at the same time routinely, both run great together... It is all in the configuration of the software and the machine.

Hellelujah!

I did a complete uninstall of 2017...restarted the computer...then a complete reinstall with BIAB & Real Drums on C:\ amd all RealTracks on another hard drive. (Which is actually what I had done initially.)

This time it works. I installed the 49 Bonus pak & all of the BIAB, Real Band and RealTrack updates and it works.

I thank all of those who helped with suggestions, advice and general moral support.

If you're stuck in a hole...it's nice to think that someone is at least calling out to you with suggestions as to how to find your way out.

To all of those people...I THANK YOU!!!!!.

Now back to making music.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
