So I changed (I won't call it an "upgrade") from Windows XP to Windows 10, and I need to reinstall BIAB 2016. I see that the Windows 10 installation has left my bb and realband directories intact in the C directory. So I'm confused as to what exactly will be overwritten when I reinstall BIAB. I would like to save my preferences so I don't have to start over from scratch. How should I reinstall so I don't lose my customizations? Do I need to copy the bb and realband directories to an external drive, completely reinstall BIAB (RealCombos and everything?), and then copy the directories back to the C drive?

Thanks!

If it has made a new Windows and Program Files folders but left bb RealBand still there, just run the files below that are in C:\bb

SetupCoyoteWT10.exe
pgdx_plug_2_0_0.exe
bbfonts.exe
SetPaths.exe
sforzando_v1.901.exe

This you may have somewhere else.
hiq_instruments_sforzando.exe

You should run the Band-in-a-Box installer again - just the main installation file, it will be named something like "band-in-a-box_realband_201x.exe". Install right into that same folder. Your preferences will not be affected.

Well that didn't go well. I ran the installer, selecting only BIAB and Realband to install, and unchecking all of the other boxes. After the installer completed I tried to run BIAB and I got one application error after another. It won't even let me exit- more application errors pop up. BIAB is now sitting there laughing at me.

I'll try to be lighthearted, it's not laughing at you, you're crying at it frown

However, give us some more information so we can help:

1:
Is this reinstall in the same folder that BiaB was installed in and worked correctly previously?

2:
Can you tell us more about the application errors? What do they state? Are they Access Violations, messages about missing files? How many messages?

3:
Can you try running the Installer again but this time as Administrator? (Right-click the exe file and select Run as Administrator)

4:
What was the exact name of the installer program that you selected?

5:
Windows 10 has strong protection when running programs, that's why Run as Administrator might be required.

6:
Also, have you got BiaB set to Run as Administrator always?

1. Yes. The reinstall was to the same (existing) folders as the previous working install.

2. The error messages include: Cannot create file "c:\bb\Data\FlashMessageLog.txt. Access is denied at 0042550E".

and then BIAB - application error... stating the same message as above.

There were more but those are the only ones showing up now.

3. I will run the installer again as administrator. Should I leave all of the boxes checked after specifying the installation directories?

4. The installer was bandinabox_realband_2016_mega.exe

5. I understand.

6. I've never tried to run it as administrator before, but this is the first time trying to run it under Windows 10. Before I always used XP.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the replies. For item number 2, this does appear to be a privilege or access error.

Try this:

Log in to your computer as the Administrator account.

Using Windows Explorer, right-click on your BiaB folder (e.g. C:\bb ).

Select Properties from the Context Menu.

Uncheck Read Only and press Apply.

The try running BiaB as Administrator (right-click the desktop icon and select from there).

To clarify, run that single installer bandinabox_realband_2016.exe, but do check all of the boxes.

However that would be unrelated to the permissions problem you are having with the bb folder. Take the Band-in-a-Box program out of the equation for a moment, and simply go in the bb folder and try creating a text file (right-click | New | text document), or making any other change for that matter. What happens? What about somewhere else on your C: drive? It doesn't sound like you have any permissions in that folder - perhaps this is somehow caused by upgrading from XP to 10, I'm not sure.

Thanks everyone. You guys had the right idea with the permissions. I spent quite a while trying to uncheck the "read only" box for the C:\bb folder, only to have it revert back to read only. Googling the issue, it seems this is a common problem when upgrading to Windows 10 and there's some debate as to the significance of the read only designation. (The theory being that if you have all the permissions the "read only" doesn't matter). Anyway, long story short, after another reinstall or two and giving myself all of the permissions I could find for C:\bb, running BIAB AS ADMINISTRATOR did the trick. BIAB now seems to run and look exactly the way it did before the upgrade. smile

Thanks again!

Great. Excellent outcome, and thanks for the feedback that you resolved OK.

On my systems, I always set the User Account Control to the lowest setting. This is a personal choice, but I know how to use it - and have excellent A/V protection also.

The UAC will stop the O/S asking questions like 'Are you sure you want to run this program?', etc).

User Account Control is available from the Control Panel.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
