Hello all. When I load a song that uses no real tracks, how can I use a real track on the melody track while keeping the melody data ? I have a MIDI sax on the melody track and want to use a real tracks tenor saxophone. Every time I follow the instructions, I do get a tenor sax but the melody gets regenerated. How can a use a real track and keep my melody? Thanks for any info. This is my first posting and I am a real newbie.

Hello ve2cjw and welcome to the forum.

The nature of the Real Tracks is that they will not play what you write on the melody (or soloist) tracks. This might be possible someday, but for now, use your MIDI sax for melody.

What Matt says should be noted.
But if you already have a midi melody you want to keep, then render the Melody track to wave via the VSC synth then save the whole file. Then you can return to the song file and try out the RT sax soloist - sort of "borrow" the Melody track for the RT. Then render the RT Sax soloist (if you like it) to a wave file via the VSC. And both the Midi melody and the RT are preserved as wave files.
Do you work in a sequencer or only in BIAB? If you work in a sequencer then import both of the melody wave files with the rest of the midi data. Hope that helps.

This question comes up a lot. The key thing to remember is the RT/RD's are audio, everything else in Biab including the melody is midi. My mantra is "midi is not audio, audio is not midi". To try to do what you want is exactly the same thing as taking a CD of you're favorite band and asking how can I change the bass track? The answer is huh? Of course you can't change the bass track of a prerecorded CD without recreating the whole studio session and recording a new bass track. That's what a Real Track is. The brilliance of PG Music is they found a way to take a prerecorded audio track and chop it up using Biab and RB based on a users chord changes and key changes. That audio track can be chopped up down to a one or two bar phrase but it can't be chopped all the way down to a single note which is what you would have to do to use it for a melody track. This is why you still need a good high quality synth to play the midi parts. How much can that cost? The sky's the limit from a few hundred all the way to a high end keyboard that costs three grand or more. A very good compromise of sound vs money is the Ketron SD2 that is sold right here. The sound quality can come pretty close to the RT's and would work pretty well for your melody track. Still, a sax is one of the most difficult instruments to recreate using midi and a synth, it won't sound as good as the RT does because that's a recording of a real sax player in the studio.

Thanks for the technical explanations, they sure help. I didn't know how Realtracks worked. I'll keep on using my Roland Sonic Cell for the melodies because I like it a lot. For sequencing, I use Cakewalk Home Studio which fills all of my needs. I am not a pro musician, only a musically minded techie.

That Sonic Cell is great, I have one too as well as Sonar Home Studio. I find myself using Real Band most of the time though because it handles all the Real Tracks/Drums. Home Studio is good but all you can do with the RT's is create a track in Biab, then import it into HS. Why not use Real Band in the first place?

Concerning Real Band, I just got it a couple of days ago. Haven't looked at it very much. I might consider it if it does as much as I hope it does. I tried Power Tracks Pro a few years ago and didn't like the interface, that's why I switched to Cakewalk. I used to have the real Cakewalk many years ago when it was a DOS program but never switched to the Sonar series because of the cost. Anyway, I don't need a big software like Sonar to do what Ilike. Take care.
Mike.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
