I believe this is an old bug that I rediscovered and found a workaround for.
Consider a triplet of shots (at a 50% Higher tempo, to get the triplet effect) followed by a return to 4/4 at the normal tempo. You can code it like this: Measure 1: 3 beats, 220bpm, D..,D.. D.. Measure 2: 4 beats, 140bpm, G..
The problem here is that the G.. will not sound. It seems to be because the last chord from the previous measure is missing. If you have a two beat measure, then the first two beats from the next measure will not sound.
The work-around is to pencil in the missing G.. as the last beat of the first measure, so it reads like this: Measure 1: 3 beats, 220bpm, D..,D.. D..,G.. Measure 2: 4 beats, 140bpm, G..
The last beat in measure 1 will not play because it is greyed out and is the fourth beat of a three beat measure, but this time the G.. for measure 2 will actually sound. I assume this will also work for those cases where the first two and three beats are missing after a two or single-beat measure, respectively.

John, Similar to you, a few years ago I discovered that if a 'number of beats per bar' setting was reduced for one bar and then the following bar was increased back to normal, it was necessary to occupy the non-playing section of the reduced-count bar with a non-playing chord or else the playback was incorrect. This has now been fixed since BIAB 2018 (if I recall correctly). The above said, when I tried with shots by going from 4/4 to 3/4 and back to 4/4 (as you describe), it worked exactly as you say (i.e. problematic playback). If shots are not involved, the bars play fine without that non-playing chord. I have BIAB 2019 (beta build 615). I will report this to the programmers and reference this thread so that they can read about your problem and its solution. Regards, Noel

Also noted, it's not the first beats that are missing, it's the first chords, assuming the measure begins with a rest.
And just read your reply, it's shots only, agreed. Prolly why I remember it as an old bug I haven't seen for a while. I remember the general case from years back but in those days I did not know the work-around. Should probably check it for held chords as well.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
