Don,

My understanding is that the $39.95 is for the upgrade to the professional edition which is not free. As far as I am aware, Avast Home edition is still free. In the past, one has only needed to apply for a new registration code.

I have always used the expiry of the program as a reason to remove the old, download the latest version and reinstall (although, because Avast keep systems up-to-date with the latest program, there's probably no real good reason to do this )

noel,
i hope you are right but i got a notice today that my free edition will expire in 18 days. upon reading your reply i went to www.avast.com and they are still offering the free home edition so i may have misunderstood the warning. thanks for setting me straight.

Don,

I believe that Noel is right. I recently went through the same thing. Seems like there was a small link at the bottom of the page to renew the free edition. Anyhow I did so about a week ago.

I've dropped Avast, and gone back to AVG. Strangely when I had the soundcard trouble last weekend, and turned Avast off (temporarily I thought), it seemed to have disappeared.

Then I received a little note from AVG, so decided to DL it and use it - both computers are on it now.

hi
I used to use the free version of Avira AntiVir Personal for a couple of years with very good results. In fact I use the premium version now which I payd for.

Avast is still free. They just want you to re-register every year. Their coming out with a new version this month or the first of next month. Completely redone with 0 day detection etc. and still free. They will have a pro version as well and also a suit that will include a firewall. I've tried them all and Avast is still the best for me. Very low resources.

Concur with ST, with the quibble that (I believe) the renewal interval is 14 months. I tried emailing them for a new key last time, but it turned out to be easier to uninstall, download and re-register. Whatever.

You can set the virus table to update automatically, which typically happens daily. You must also be sure to update the program itself at least monthly. Right click on the tray icon for update options.

I, too, switched from AVG, which had become a resource hog. Avast seems to tread rather more lightly. If I was going to switch again, I'd go to Threatfire, about which I'd heard some amazing stuff.

I've used Threatfire. 2 years, for some time and also use PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Threatfire is not a standalone AV product. It's meant as an addon to your existing AV. TF provides what is called 0 day protection. It looks at behavior as opposed to a database on know viruses. Works really well with Avast. When V 5.0 of Avast comes out it will contain a behavior element as well. Not sure how it will work with TF at that point.

I don't use anything. Run bareback. Twice a year I rebuild my system. It's easier, saves time, and the PC runs good for more months at a stretch.

Happy Trails,
I used to operate that way as well and I think there's some validity to it. If I was to add up all of the time spent messing with malware programs in one form or another I be ahead of the game to do just that. However if you use the internet for more then just looking around and posting to forums you need more security. If your banking or buying stuff etc. you need more.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
