Thanks for having me here and for reading my first post. I've returned to BIAB 2021 after a long hiatus but would have described myself as a power user of v6.0 (I still have the floppy disks).

One of the important selling points for me was the ability to export a BIAB song to MIDI or to MusicXML format so that I can edit the notation in a scoring program. Today I've tried unsuccessfully to do that, experiencing the following:

  • MusicXML only seems to export TABs. I need proper musical notation.
  • MIDI files do not play correctly. They do not resemble the BIAB tracks audibly, while the notation is not really human-readable.

For BIAB to work for me I need to be able to rely on at least one of these options to export notation that resembles the BIAB song.

Can someone please let me know how I can achieve this?

Thanks,
Gary.

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the forums.

I wonder if you are exporting songs that use Realtracks backings?

Realtracks are audio rather than MIDI. While all the MIDI backings that you were familiar with back in v6.0 are still there (and more, most likely), BIAB now also creates backing tracks with audio.

So that I can doublecheck your issue, can you please give me the name of the style you are using?

You'll find it listed in the MEMO and it can be copied there and pasted into this thread.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks very much for your reply, Noel.

I thought about that too. I'm using a MIDI style called MARIACHI.STY which is not a Realtracks backing.

Thanks,
Gary.

Gary,

I just loaded the song demo, generated it and saved it in XML. I then opened the XML in MuseScore. The PDF below is what the music looked like (the first page is a cover page; music starts on page 2).

A couple of things to try.

1. Make sure that you've got the latest update of BIAB installed. They at the below link. #813 is the latest.

https://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm

2. When you use "Save Special | Save as XML", there's a dropdown list in the middle of the left column that sets the "Tabulature". Make sure that this is set to "None".

Hopes this helps,
Noel

I’m not at a computer but I wanted to reassure you that saving special to Music XML does work to take your song into notation programs. It may have been a setting choice as Noel mentioned.

And, welcome to the forum.

Thank you very much, Noel and Matt.

I've followed your direction and so far no joy, but your replies give me confidence that this can be solved somehow. The PDF sample that you embedded is exactly what I'm wanting to achieve, but as of yet, I've not been able to.

I've recorded the following screen video for you, demonstrating the steps that I'm taking to save to both MusicXML and MIDI and the sub-par results when the files are opened in MuseScore.

[video:youtube]https://youtu.be/P4JXVG_MxmA[/video]

I'd be grateful if you could please review this and let me know how I can overcome this problem.

Thanks again,
Gary.

Hi Noel.

I posted a reply earlier.

I'm wondering if you might be able to help me with this, please?

Thanks,
Gary.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
