From what I understand it's not safe to either shut down my PC with BIAB hard drive connected via USB or to disconnect my BIAB hard drive before my PC says it is safe to do.
1. I'm done with a session and want to close BIAB and disconnect the USB HD.
2. I save my project then close BIAB program.
3. I go to the bottom right of task tray and click on the USB icon to bring up the menu.
4. I choose Eject Sabient External Device and the menu closes.
5. A dialog pops up and says there are programs or files using the program and I should close those files or programs first. I don't find anything open. I'll have to make several repeated attempts to safely eject it before it actually tells me it's safe to remove it. I think it's a matter of time rather than multiple attempts that finally allows me to eject it safely.
Only thing I can think of that the program is/was using would be my USB audio interface. But, I leave that connected at all times for over 4 years. I use that with all other audio programs. I've tried clearing the clipboard via Windows +V but that doesn't seam to be the cause.

Here are my questions; Why does it take so long after closing BIAB to be able to safely remove my BIAB hard drive?
Is there something I can do before or after closing the program to speed this up?

Tobias,it is not just BiaB. I have the same problem with a number of programs. It is a Win 10 problem. It is a random thing here.

Another Win 10 problem is that Win 10 will sometimes restart after shutting down.

I don't know why either of these things happen. It is not constant enough for me to do some trouble shooting.

I have seen that message from time to time, but like you I wasn't able to find anything running.

I purchased a 1TB USB drive that would occasionally give me the message. I contacted the makers and they said it was truly plug and play and not to worry about removing it at any time. There was no need to eject. But today, as a matter of course, I do eject the drive. If it says that it is being used, I just ignore the message.

Just a question but why do you want to disconnect the drive? There is no harm is shutting down Windows with a USB drive attached.

My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

In the good article Martin provides from a couple of years ago, note that the Quick Removal (safer) setting is the default now. But I’m not sure about that if you have an older computer. In other words, I’m not sure Windows updates change the setting if you had the cache on. Goodness knows, Windows updates will sometimes change settings; the ones I double check are power settings and drivers. This one, though, I’m not sure if it does.

It takes only a moment to go there and see what your setting is, and choose the safer setting.

I also use a third party utility called USB Safely Remove, which lets me see all my drives and also can safely ‘force stop’ a drive when you get the message it cannot be removed.

And etcjoe is correct that Windows safely closes a USB drive at shutdown, so you can just leave your PG Music-supplied drive always plugged in.

Yeah, I've had this issue before where Chrome was not allowing me to eject a hard drive, despite the fact that Chrome had never used the drive in the first place. There's a way of looking up what program is using an external drive using the Windows Event Viewer, which is what told me this. Be sure to close all programs before ejecting, or as others have mentioned it's safe to shut down or reboot with the hard drive connected.

Thanks for the info from everyone. I suppose I just won't have a concern about it any longer.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
