Sorry, didn't mean to stir up anything. It's the first time I have ordered a USB Drive version, so was just curious is all.

I am using 2022 ok from D/L's, so it's no real biggie...But I'd like to get over to the drive version asap, notwithstanding smile

Don’t worry about it. You’ve been around long enough to know that we are always fussing at each other for something, grin

"I have one thing to say in defense of what PG Music is doing, and that is there is no way that they could efficiently have everything ready to go because they don’t have any idea about what an individual customer will order until they actually order."

A vital part of Inventory Control is forecasting/projecting future sales, based on past sales experience. Every company does this. They also anticipate market factors, such as supply chain issues, and plan ahead to make sure they have stock. You can buy blank hard drives anywhere.

I have been a proponent of PG's programs for many years, and I will continue to support them.

Based on Dr. Gannon's response in +++ THIS +++ thread, stock should not be an issue.

Quote:
what with the shortages of supplies how is PG set on hard drives and usb sticks for the updates?

Earl,
Good question. We heard about the shortages a few months ago, so got our orders in early. So we're good with supply.

The quote is slower than molasses in January, not that the supply chain is slow in January. The implication is molasses flows very slowly in January because it is cold.

the hard drives are kind a custom product, everybody orders different add ons etc. all that has to be put on the drive before shipping.

Your product is available almost instantly for download and you get the drive about a week or so later which has been my experience.

There are horrendous hold-ups with all sorts of electronics stuff, often because so many ICs are on long(!) deliveries.

"Long" is often "52 weeks", which actually means "we really have no idea when we might get any, but it's no time soon".

I've spent quite a bit of this year redesigning existing products to take different ICs that we can get hold of. We see a sufficient quantity of a part that could substitute, we buy it, I redesign the hardware and software to work with it. It's a bit scary as a mistake in the part choice could be pretty catastrophic.

This has changed this year. The addons are now download only and are no longer shipped.

Could you cite your source for this? The reason I ask is that the extra Paks were always on the hard drive if you buy the audiophile version (so you get all WAV files that are still on the large side for downloading.

My source is my order page where it said these addons were download only! Last year they were added to my order on CD after they were missing from the shipment. This year they changed it so those are download only. BUT, I do not have the audiophile version so your results may be different.

That's correct - physical stock is not an issue. What takes time is loading the hard drives. A single Audiophile drive takes about 4 hours to load, for example.

That can also be correct - the first couple days after release often gets a patch update or two, and if a major issue is found we definitely do not want to ship that out! This is not part of the delay this year, but it has happened before.

I can perceive at least part of what the problem is because I once screwed myself out of the bonus UNRELEASED Real tracks IN 24 BIT by accidentally omitting the 49 PAK from my initial order and splitting the order over two different days. As an Audiophile customer, I get my entire order on the HD. This year that includes the 49 PAK, the latest Xtra styles pak, and the latest XPRO pak. PG Music takes the time to make to make sure that the 60 unreleased bonus tracks in the 49 PAK are 24 bit on the audiophile drives. But they don’t know in advance that I’ll order the 49 PAK. With MY error 2 years ago, I got 12 bit bonus tracks and could only resolve the issue by shipping my audiophile HD back at my expense. I ultimately decided to put up with 60 12 bit tracks for a year. IMHO, if there were a way to have everything ready to go on ordering day, it would create more expense than it is worth.

I said that I had one thing to say in PG Music’s defense, but perhaps I have a second thing to say which is something that I say quite often. Over the years, what PG Music has given me in overall value, far exceeds what they have extracted from my bank account. I often think about what other software companies charge me every year for their yearly updates or subscriptions and realize just how genuinely dedicated PG Music is to helping musicians. They could charge so much more for their software, and they don’t so that it remains affordable to a greater client base. If they do things a certain way that is different from the average company, its usually to keep their costs from being driven up and passed on to their customers. PG Music has been such a customer oriented company during the time that I have been doing business with them, they would have to come to Mobile and burn my house down before I’d complain about their business practices.

Thank you for the kind words Keith! Indeed we do everything we can to keep costs down so we can pass the savings on to you grin

Feel free to cite me as a source, not that I have that much credibility wink

Hard drives are shipped as the BIAB package only - any add-ons (Xtra Styles PAKs, 49-PAK, etc) must be downloaded and installed. This is true for all packages of BIAB.

We currently ship from a distribution centre in California. Flash drives are shipped via USPS and/or DHL, while hard drives are shipped by Fedex.

Almost, it's one to the right, in one of the yellow ones right above a red one.

Excellent post, Simon! You summed up the situation perfectly.
People love PG and understand your work and your passion (quite) well. The proof is the number of people who have decided not to take advantage of the remission of the new tax. I join everyone in thanking you for this fantastic product.
I often try to remember my emotion and my wonder when a few years ago I finally managed to do my first song with "green" tracks. What happiness! And this magic always operates, and better and better, for example with these new surprise songs! Or this way of producing solos step by step!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
