I just ran into some weird problem trying to install BiaB 2022 onto a new Surface Pro 8.

The installation disk that gets flawlessly recognized by some prior Surface Pro (2017) System, now does not get recognized from the new Surface Pro 8. It is thus *not* possible to have BiaB 2022 installed via the shipped HD.

Checking this drive on some other desktop machines, it always gets recognized.

The difference between those systems that recognize the installation HD and the new Surface Pro 8 is just that the systems recognizing the installation drive do have USB A ports, whereas the Surface Pro 8 does have USB C / Thunderbolt ports.

The Surface Pro 8 has no problem recognizing some other external SSD which provides itself a USB C port.

I just checked with a sturdy BiaB 2021 Installation HD a connetion between the drives's USB A port and the Surface Pro 8 USB C ports - no dice.

Is there a problem with USB C / Thunderbolt ports and the shipped BiaB installation HD?

It appears that the BiaB Installation HD here is somewhat flaky after all.

While - as a workaround - trying to copy its content via some desktop PC that does recognize this drive onto the SSD that is recognized by the Surface Pro 8, I did get a notification midstream that something is wrong with the drive. PC froze - cold reboot - fiddling with the drive's USB A port -> now renders the drive seemingly thoroughly corrupted. It now does get even no longer recognized by the otherwise sturdy desktop PC. Botched drive - no installation . . .

It would be of interest, though, whether other users experience any problems getting the installation HD with its USB A port recognized by systems with USB C / Thunderbolt ports.

There shouldn't be an issue with USB-C, although if you are using a USB hub (as opposed to a simple USB-A to USB-C adapter), you may need to connect it to power.

I would suggest swapping the hard disk into a different enclosure. (e.g. one you have from a previous BB version). It sounds like a bad connection with the enclosure.

Yes Andrew, these are the usual suspects. I made sure to use a direct USB A to USB C cable; length about 30 cm so as not to lose too much oomph. Prior experience shows that using a 2 meter cable reduces transmission speeds substantially compared to a 30 cm cable, say, on a USB C SSD drive. The BiaB installation drive did not get recognized, though.

With respect to a different casing -> I had the drive completely dismantled and made sure to have the connectors fixed properly. This exercise helped once around Christmas Time with this very drive, yet now there is no way to have this drive resuscitated. I even checked on previous BiaB installation drives as you suggested. Most of the drives did not get recognized by the Surface Pro 8. One drive got sort of recognized (BiaB 2016), I mounted the BiaB 2022 installation disk into this housing and got a warning message that there is a problem with the drive. Installation was not possible.

After retrying a couple of times, I got the drive to install BiaB 2022. Midstream I had a couple of file errors, which I could ignore, because I installed over a folder that is a copy of the BiaB 2022 installation on the previous Surface Pro (2017). I thus needed essentially the installation of the program itself, basically because I now assigned different drive letters to the installation, which needed to get appropriately assigned via some installation procedure - and fonts and stuff . . .

The whole rigmarole appears to be somewhat flimsy, though. This touchy drive connection between the BiaB installation USB A disks and the USB C Surface Pro 8 sure is annoying.

Thanks for chiming in, Andrew. I had a live chat with your distinguished colleague Ember on this issue during the weekend, asking for a potential download link of the installation files coming to rescue. Since I do now have a running BiaB 2022 version on this Surface Pro 8, this request is now kind of obsolet. The drive itself ist still unreliable, though. Next time around I'd sure prefer a download version that may go onto some SSD with rock solid USB C ports.

Thank you very much for your support, Andrew. And extend my best compliments to Ember who was likewise very supportive during this weekend.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
