I'm running BiaB 64-bit, the latest version. Ever since installing v2022, there's a popup that reads "OK to Update Style list now?" that appears. It doesn't matter whether I select Yes, Not Now, or Cancel and then click on the "Don't Ask Again" box -- it always appears when I boot v2022. Also, several times I've indicated "Yes" to have it update the list, hoping that finally it might go away. But it never does.

I think this is a bug, but just in case it isn't, I'm wondering if you might know of a way to get this popup to stay gone? It's just an annoyance, but still, I'd like the software to do what it's supposed to.

Hi Michael,

It's not a bug.

Whenever a new BIAB program update is installed, the program needs to have the Stylepicker updated as well for BIAB to work correctly. This is what that popup is all about. I'm guessing that BIAB is automatically installing the latest program update and this reminder to update the styles is a consequence of that.

You could disable the "Automatically check for updates" option in preferences and that should stop (a) the program updating (which is not advisable) and (b) the subsequent need to update the style list.

Regards,
Noel

I have noticed the newest versions of BIAB no longer have this auto-reminder! We have asked for it to be removed for so long that it finally is gone. So I am surprized by this report.

Is this happening even when no need updates (such as patch updates or add-on packages) have been installed to your BB directory? If you go in and manually do a rebuild of your StylePicker after ignoring the message does it continue to pop up? Or, is it only when you do updates? If it's the latter, then what Noel96 mentioned is true - it should only be prompting you to do the update when there's a patch update or add-on package that's been installed, so if if you've already rebuilt the StylePicker and haven't done any recent updates, it shouldn't be happening every time you run the program. If it is, let us know!

Thanks for the responses. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I have been seeing this popup ever since I first installed BiaB 2022 and even after downloading and installing the program updates. I paid attention to the message after downloading the updates, and went ahead and had it update the style list, but it doesn't matter. It still reappears. I could run the update right now, shut down and reboot BiaB, and that popup will be there again, prompting me to do what I just did.

Hope I made it a bit more clear.

I think I'm inclined to agree with MusicStudent. I don't recall seeing any prompts to d/l the latest program update. I've just been checking periodically.

Michael, do you Run BIAB As Administrator? If not, try that.

Matt, you were onto something. I ran BiaB as Admin, ran the update utility, shut down BiaB, then booted it again, as Admin. No popup. So I exited BiaB again, then booted it again normally -- that is, not as Admin. No popup. Yay!

So it appears fixed. I knew I could count on you guys to come up with a fix!

So I gotta ask, what is it about running the program as Admin that causes it to work right?

My guess is that it has to set a flag somewhere (perhaps intrface.bbw or elsewhere) and it doesn't have suitable permission to access and update that feature from a non Admin account.

What he said. As far as I know, there is no downside to Run As Administrator. I think JFord may know more about this topic.

We've gotten mixed messages in the past regarding whether to run as administrator or not. What I do know is that I've been running as administrator for years now, and other than actual bugs, BIAB runs rock solid, VST's work, and I just don't see any downside to doing so.

If you execute an application with the ‘run as administrator’ command, you are notifying your operating system that your application is safe and doing something that requires the administrator privileges, with your confirmation. When you choose “Run as Administrator,” User Account Control basically steps aside, and the application will run with full administrator access to everything on your system. So when you run an app as an administrator using this option, it means you are giving the app special permissions to access restricted parts of your system that would otherwise be off-limits to most programs. If a program isn’t working as you would expect it to, you can run it as an administrator and see if that clears up the problem - it certainly can! But I wouldn't do it for just any old application from anywhere.

Ember

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
