It's been a while since I posted a song here. With the help of the RealTracks and RealDrums in BIAB 2010 (Christmas present!), I recorded a tune I wrote earlier this week titled, "The People of Haiti Sang Hymns." With TCHelicon supported harmonies, the only truly "real" part of the recording is my original vocal.

The People of Haiti Sang Hymns

As always, comments are welcome.

Here are a few of the arrangement details:

Style: _SLOBOSP.Sty
Melody: Midi Flute
Audio: Vocal Recorded directly in BIAB (with a post recording volume adjustment in BIAB)
Harmony: TCHelicon 2 up, 1 down harmonized against the chords with some tweaks and output as individual .wav files for mixdown

Mixdown: Audacity (I have PowerTracks and RealBand but I'm not as quick with those tools)

Here's the BIAB Song Summary File:

John this is a very nice tribute to the resilence and faith of the Haitian people. I also liked the style you used.

If you can you should buy a pop filter for your mic to get rid of those plosives in your vox. They are cheap and effective. Or just google how to make a pop filter and make your own.

Hi John,

Finally got the chance to listen to your song and I like it and most of all the thoughts it expressed.

I couldn't help but be moved when I saw the TV clips of people singing in spite of all their misery.

Very keen observation, John. Like Horatio Spafford penning, "It Is Well With My Soul" as he crossed the waters where he was told he lost his most dearest loved ones, music is the response to tragedy as much as it is a response to celebration. God designed music that way. He uses it to comfort the soul in times of pain. For centuries, it always walked hand in hand with the truths of scripture as a means of strengthening the heart of the believer in the greatest, most overwhelming circumstances.

Think about it a moment. Like other events in the past, the people that morning in Haiti were going about their day just as with any other moment in time. And the next moment before they they could think it came upon them. It should cause one to think soberly on the vapor life really is.

Thanks again, John, for being moved to pen this song. I apologize for not being able to supply any technical thoughts.

Thanks for the kind comments (and your suggestions, Josie).

My sister, a professional photographer who has traveled to Haiti a number of times with the Haitian Health Foundation, just sent me a message from one of the group's interpreters, Phillippe. Phillippe had written to staff at the foundation:

"Every where to Port-au-prince is the same. Riches people die, poors die, nices die, ugly die, polices die, mufties die, ministers die, intellectuals die, illiterates die; every kind of people die. The earthquake didn’t know who you were. The deaths beside the streets are like the sand beside the sea. They put them by batch (lot), they carry them in the big trucks and burry them like animals."

It's beyond my comprehension.

For anyone who's interested, the Haitian Health Foundation's web page is:

Somewhat coincidentally, my sister posted a photo slide show (pre-earthquake) of children and adults from Jeremie, Haiti with a audio track of them singing hymns. Jeremie wasn't impacted severely by the earthquake but the already impoverished community is now dealing with a major influx of refugees from the earthquake damage zone. Kate's web page link is:

With Haiti on my mind ...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
