Happy New Year.
I'm currently transcribing some chords into BB and the chord F* appears a few times.
Using just F major doesn't sound quite right and I've fumbled around on my acoustic trying various obvious alts but what does the * actually signify please?
Is it a shorthand of some kind?

My guess would be FMaj7 if its meant to be F followed by a triangle.
Could also be F diminished if F followed by a small circle.

I have never seen a F* or any * chord.

Here is a list of all of the chord symbols and a * is not listed:

https://jazz-library.com/articles/chord-symbols/

If possible I would look at the notes in the song (hopefully you have more than just the chord symbols) and figure out what chord it is suppose to be.

Good luck!

Thanks folks.
I can't see the notation as it's a Chord Sheet only.
Later I'll try a few of those on that list. Although I don't 'read' as such, I could get it from the stave - if only there was one.

Ian, give us the chord progression. Or post a picture of the song so we can see the chord progression.

Mario is correct, there is no such symbol* in music notation of chords.

It could be that the program doing the printing could not reproduce the small circle for Diminished, or the small circle with a diagonal line that is Half-Diminished. Or as Andrew said, less likely, the triangle that means Major 7th.

Show us the song.

* unless it's something like this, where it could mean there is an explanation of the chord somewhere else. I've seen this done when the exact voicing of a chord is needed because there is no standard name for it.

Joke overheard that was said by young music students:
"There are five types of chords - major, minor, suspended, augmented, and demolished."

Its here -
https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/becky-hill/only-you-chords-4423622
Two mistakes on my part
1 - it's G* not F*.
2 - if I'd bothered to check the very top of the chord sheet I'd have seen G* shown as a hybrid guitar G major 320033 rather than the expected first inversion of 320003. I've played them both and can't see why he made it different. The extra D doesn't do much to boost the chord.
Matt was right - the * means "explanation elsewhere".

With the capo on the first fret, you G* is actually G(b6b9). Without the capo it is just a G. But Matt was right, * means look for footnote. grin

The 320033 is quite common among guitarist. It is commonly used when going to a Cadd9. The fingering change would be 320033 to 032033. It is also used when going to a form of D or to Bm or Bm7, making a smoother chord transition.

Dan, if putting a capo on the first fret wouldn't just be an G#/Ab chord? The fingering would still be 320033 from the capo would it not? The capo would raise each note by a half step. When putting on a capo a guitarist would still use the same chord fingerings, it would just be a different chord, in this case a G to G#. Or am I on a different wavelength then you?

Opps, Just like me to over analyze things. Of course you are correct. I have been playing the keys for a long time now. Good catch my friend. grin

In my defense I thought there would be something special noted with the voicing of the G*. The 320033 is very common for a G chord - nothing special here.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
