Can someone tell me if I can import an mp3 of myself playing guitar and singing into BIAB, and then add drums and bass to it? My attempts so far have been futile. I used the Automatic Chord Wizard, set the beat , and have been unsuccessful past that. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can do it, but timing issues might crop up unless you recorded your guitar/vocals with a metronome. RealBand might be a better choice for this.

Hi tunaboy,

Welcome to the forums.

As Barry said, it can be done. Under "Audio" on the top menu, there's an option to "Import Audio". You could load the file in via this. That being said, though, as Barry has pointed out, unless your timing is 100% accurate throughout the whole song, it will be very difficult (if not nearly impossible) to get your mp3 to exactly match added drums and bass, beat by beat. Because the bass and drums are electronically generated, they are 100% accurate with timing.

The option, again as Barry has said, is to use Realband. Matching tempos can be done by generating the bass and the drums and then slicing your mp3 into sections (if necessary) and stretch/shrink those sections to match the generated instruments. If you initially recorded your mp3 against a set rhythm, it may fit fairly easily.

In my experience, the best way to add bass and drums is to lay those lines down first and then record the other against them. That way, there will be no timing issues. It might turn out that it's a whole heap easier simply to lay down a chord progression, solo the bass and drums, and then record your guitar playing and singing on top of this.

All the best,
Noel

The Audio Chord Wizard supports the generation of a tempo map. Importing some mp3 and sycing a BB arrangement should be a piece of cake.

That has been my experience as well. Use BIAB to create the basic tracks first. I normally create my songs while playing my acoustic guitar. Once I get a cohesive chord progression for the various parts (verse, chorus, etc..) and a melody going (lyrics seem to always come last), I'll then input the tempo, time signature, chords, etc. into BIAB and play with various styles until I get something I like. Typically, once I get the arrangement the way I like it, I will drag & drop the tracks (using the DAW plug-in feature) into one of my preferred DAW's (either SONAR or REAPER) and record my extra bits there (acoustic guitar, vocals, etc). All subsequent recording, arranging, mixing , FX plug-in processing & exporting takes place in my preferred DAW's, at this point.

Cheers,

Billy Buck

tuna,

Martin is right - automatic chord wizard can do exactly what you're asking. You say you've set the beat, then been unsuccessful beyond that. Typically when you import audio via ACW, the midi style is silenced. There's a checkbox to enable it. Can you give us a little more detail about the "unsuccessful past that". What steps have you taken, what's happened, when you play BIAB can you hear your MP3?

Bruce

Thanks for all your imput. It was quite helpful. I ended up taking the path of least resistance. I found a BIAB file online of the song I was playing, and muted the guitar, then played my guitar and added my vocals over it. Thanks again.

Once i open a file in Rb and set the tempo map, i tend to stay in Rb and not drag to another DAW since RB is the one that had the ability to make a tempo map out of a file that did not have one. Then add any tracks you want. and it should all run smoothly to the tempo mapped MP3 file.

I tried opening the song in Real Band and adding tracks as you folks suggested and that worked perfectly for me. Thanks again, great info.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
