I got a tablet. Caveat Emptor big time for now.
Android
They are starting to dump stuff. The local computer big box joint here has 4 types of tablets with Android.
2.0 $120 2.1 $150 2.2 $250
Unless you are real linux/unix guru wait for 3.0
I think myself tech savvy for a 'senior' and I started out with CP/M, MP/M, Xenix and Unix. I didn't Dos except to run the think as a terminal, then I opened a computer training joint with 25 Olivetti 386's running Dos/Windows and cabled to a big Unix box. I resold Motorola, NCR, Olivetti, and Plexus. (All Unix stuff or related.)
I will post shots of the lead sheets from Band in a Box which I copied to the clipboard, put on a thumb drive and copied to the tablet. Took me forever. The copy function is buried in Android, I needed to download an app for that.
The tablet works fine on my home network, but I need to mess with it, it goes to sleep and sometimes doesn't connect unless I make it.
I got mp3's rendered and copied over.
In windows and Linux I can embed the lead sheets in Powerpoint or Open Office presentations and hit play, first sheet is on the system nice and big and my rendered Band in a Box song plays, when it's done all I have to do is hit space bar and the next one comes up and plays just fine.
I cannot find an app for Android 2.2 to do that. I can display the sheet, go to the music button, hit play and it works, but it sure isn't easy or elegant.
What I like is my photos (I take a lot) to on the tablet and display quite well..you can swipe them and see the next one.
I'm not a fan of the network speed of Android 2.2. on my tablet. Slow..or I'm impatient.
I took it on the last trip to Toronto on the train and it worked fine on their free wireless Internet as we sped through the snowy landscape.
The file structure of Android is pretty much identical to Linux, I see almost no difference.
I will attempt to figure out a shell script to display the lead sheets and play the song, which should be fairly straight forward, but I've had the thing for 6 days and I worked (gave in more like it) consulting for 3 days, and got a new keyboard so I've not spent much time with it.
At the end of the day, if you are really patient, understand Linux somewhat, and want a big mp3 player that can show you photos, this might be ok for you now.
The next version of Android may just sort out some of the issues. I expected a robust operating system, and speed, and got neither. But it's a challenge and I like that part.
Off to Toronto for 2 days, this time for a concert....
I'll post pics/descriptions and other stuff when I get back. I will take the toy with me.
Oh, and one other negative. I hate screens that are not clean and if you touch it all the time....I feel like I'm obsessive compulsive, I want to carry windex and paper towels..LOL.
And, this is the future for giggers. I'm just not sure we are there yet, but in 12 months it's going to be fine.
And Blackberry's tablet is QNX and I've worked on that before at the local hospital, and that o/s is very proven, has all the bells and whistles.
Anyone who knows an app for Android that does powerpoint or open office presentations please let me know. The whole app thing is loaded with junk no one needs and it clutters up the system.

I would just print to .PDF if I had an android tablet. Plenty of ,PDF readers including Acrobat.
I am waiting for Honeycomb (3.x) not necessarily to use it as a .PDF reader but because it will CRUSH the prices of the 2.x tablets.
I had never thought about embedding the .MP3s behind a .PPT file. Maybe I'll try it with ThinkFree on my phone..

John,
Very interesting, both your background and the subject.
A few folks on the psrtutorial.com/forum/ site are using ipads. From my viewpoint(er pocketbook) they are very expensive.
You've probably done this but if not, google following for lot of info. Maybe junk dont know.
android power point app
Keep up the good work.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
