Hi!

I would strongly vote for a ritardando/accelerando function. Oftentimes I want the tempo of a song to gradually in- or decrease. To change the tempo at every bar is only a rough workaround, I find...

Has been requested many times by me and many other BIAB users in this forum.
That is the proof that it becomes urgent for BIAB to implement fundamental professional features of music performance.

I used to never do that in BIAB, but export the MID, import it into Sonar, and do the ritardando there.

I think that is more problematic with RealTracks though. For what you export and import with a Real Track there is audio, not midi.

Certainly there are tools in Sonar and other DAWs to stretch time without changing pitch, etc. Doesn't always work well though, especially if it is a major tempo change.

Stretching Real Tracks would I assume work better in BIAB, as it has time-stretching feature made especially for the Real Tracks.

So yes, now with RT, I think BIAB should include that capability. And changing only at the beginning of each measure does not cut it.

How about RealBand? Does it stretch the RTs well enough to do accelerando and ritardando with it?

In Sonar there are various ways to do a ritardando, including drawing the tempo map, etc. They way I always found easiest (for MIDI only though) is the command "insert series of tempos". You specify the beginning time of the ritardando, and what the beginning tempo should be there. Then you specify the end time of the ritardando, and what the tempo should be there. You also specify whether you want the tempo changes to occur every beat or every half beat. Click OK and it figures out all the tempo changes necessary.

Follow-up.

I tried it. I opened up the BIAB file, in which I wanted to add a ritardando, in RealBand.

RealBand has a feature similar to what I described in Sonar, called "fill..", to set a beginning and ending time, and beginning and ending tempo, and it fills in a series of tempo changes. I didn't know, however, if that would only work on MIDI tracks, or on Real Tracks as well.

Well, it does work on RealTracks, but not well. Yes, it slowed the tempo down the way I specified. But the sound became very bad, with strange noise added, etc. So even the new time-stretching engine doesn't do that well. Hopefully it will be improved in the future. Of course that might also depend on the real tracks being stretched, and also the amount of ritardando or accelerando. It may work OK for a small change in tempo, don't know. (Mine was a large change, to about half the original tempo.)

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
