When I try to name a track in the Classic Tracks Window, if I try to type the letter 'p', it doesn't get typed. Instead, some weird thing happens in the Bars window - the column of that bar turns blue and I get a "1a" at the top of the column. If I press 'p' again (presumably because I'm still trying to type it and it didn't come up!), the indicator changes to "1b" and the column turns green. A third press makes it go back to normal, but I still don't have the letter 'p' in my track name.
As you might imagine, this makes it difficult to type names such as "Soprano" or "Tympani".
What is happening, and how can I turn it off, please?

So, I've since discovered, from the help, that the 'a' and 'b' things are called Part Markers, so that's nice - good to be able to sound like I know what I'm talking about (after close to a decade using PT).
However, I still don't understand why pressing 'P' while editing a track name in the Classic Tracks window toggles the Part Markers...

CTRL key stuck? That should be a keyboard shortcut.. What version of PT?
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I wonder if Windows "sticky keys" feature was accidentally turned on...

Windows sticky keys. I got caught by that just last year for the first time since I started XP. I was holding down a key while I was thinking of what to type next and things were turned on forever. The Control key really made it hard to get out of things and the shift key also made me crazy. In 9-10 years I never came across sticky keys and when I did, I was glad I had anonter PC to look up how to turn it off. Becuase I couldn't do a search or scroll a web page while the control key was on. Everything just highlighted.
The P could be a hotkey for something. There is a one letter keystroke in either Yahoo or Gmail that marks an Email as read. So if you hit it while typing in the wrong place, you don't get the letter. It just keeps toggling the Email. I disabled the keystoke shartcuts. But I could be a Kaystroke for something.
I've hit keys and wound up in another galaxy. Call support. Might be a bug too. Wayne,

Thanks for the replies, folks! To answer the questions and suggestions:
rharv: PT 2011 (1) (I assume the 1 means build number...?) I skipped PT 2010 (because for some reason didn't hear about it), but have used PT since version 7 or 8 or so.
While I'm at it, I should mention that I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit version.
jford/redguitars: I checked my Sticky Keys setting and as far as I could tell, it was off. I went so far as to disable Windows' ability to automatically turn it on (with the 5 Shift presses in a row).
I tested it again, and still have the same problem, so that doesn't seem to be the solution.
redguitars (or anyone else who may know): I'm willing to call support, but will it help? What can they do at this point?
What seems especially weird is this: When I go to the Bars window itself, the letter 'p' does NOT toggle Part Markers but plays my song (though why 'p' is used for play, when the space bar already toggles play/stop, is a design decision that will remain a mystery to me unto my death).

Okay, I just tested this on my machine. I generally don't use the classic tracks, but yet, I got the same thing. When i hit a lower case "p", it toggles the part markers. Upper case "P" types in okay. This would seem to be a bug. Even if "p" were supposed to toggle the part marker, if the focus of the program is in edit mode in the track name box, all standard letters should work. I'd suggest sending and email to support@pgmusic.com and referencing this thread.

I just checked RealBand also and found that although "p" doesn't seem to change the part marker, I was unable to enter a lower case "p" into the track name field of the classic tracks screen.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
