I have been eying the 1800 model just up from that, but for that price this unit is interesting.

I thought it over and i really want the 1800 unit as it is rack mountable, and has more inputs. I will wait for a sale on that one.

Change of mind, For $100 this is a good item, i would not pay $200 for it, but $100 is cool. If i hate it I can make a great door stop out of it. So i ordered one. I will never track a full band, but i might have a couple friends over and we can all plugin.

I just ordered one too. It looks like a good price; we'll see if it's too good to be true.

I like what I see and read, but alas funding is all dried up after the new VLT and the SSD drive. but for sure let us know how they work out.

Here's hoping the mic pre-amps are nice and clean. I like that you can power it by either the bus or a wall-wart, because power on USB has always been a potential noise source.

The very first USB audio interface I ever used would pick up the pulse width modulated voltage being sent to the LCD screen to regulate the backlight brightness. It would show up as a high frequency whine somewhere between 6 and 15 kHz.

So, I'm not all about bus-powered.

No, I just ordered early in the day and KS is next to CO.

I think I ordered before the thing went semi-viral.

Well, about to give the first serious go with this thing. Initial impressions aren't so great - plastic housing, no balanced audio outs, crackling trying to stream Pandora (I've never had this issue with any other interface before).

Another hassle - unit must be off while Windows fires up, then 'turn on' the power; otherwise not recognized. Now, that would be fine if there was a power switch on it - which there is not. Going to go buy it's own power strip so that I have a power button for it!

I have the latest drivers, btw.

@Scott

If you are using Win7, the latest drivers could be a problem. I have a different Tascam unit (US144) that I use on my laptop for OTR recording. I had to uninstall the "latest" drivers and let Win7 auto-detect the unit and install its own drivers.

@robbmiller, thanks for the headsup. Looking for a response from TASCAM tech support in the next day or two.

The latest drivers come with a warning to have the latest firmware installed, with no instructions on how to upgrade firmware!

Haven't tried @robbmiller's suggestion yet - still haven't received any reply from Tascam support.

Tried a borrowed EMU 0404 USB unit tonight with the beta Win7 drivers.

Verdict: Streaming audio is fine without the 'static' dropouts = good
still unusable latency (over 14 mS and still glitches)= bad

Final verdict: whatever chipset this new cheapo lappy has = bad for audio processing. Will not be using it for my work; relegated to kid's homework computer.

Tascam US-800 is going back to Musician's Friend for sure.

Decision is whether or not to buy a new system board for my old lappy; (which was actually a killer lappy before ye olde electrolytic capacitors decided to give out) and run the risk of being in this situation again in a year, 6 mos, etc, or kit out a used dual core XP pro where I can put in firewire capability to run my PreSonus FireBox.

I will be very interested to hear other's experiences with their systems and what those systems consist of.

Here's the specifics of this machine:
AMD C-50 processor (dual core) running at 1.0 GHz
3 GB of RAM, 2.60 GB usable
5400 RPM SATA hard drive
Win 7 64 Home Premium

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
