. I want a command that will save all the optional settings as I have them right now.
I am playing through some of the "Swinging jazz Piano solos." I want to see the notation at 6 bars per screen. I want this setting to stick for the time being, but each new song loads at 2 bars per screen.
I am having fun with a couple new VSTs. I apply one to the Soloist voice for the current song. I want this VST to be in effect for the next song, but its not. I have to set it up over again.
You get the idea...
What I am requesting is a menu choice, probably in the FILE menu, that will save every detail of the configuration I have at the moment: bars-per-screen, VSTs on each instrument, printer setup, song settings, etc. There could even be the ability to create a short list of "save configuration as's": MY ACCOMPANIMENT. MY KARAOKE, MY MY LEAD SHEET, etc.

Just trying to understand this better.
Since we already have Opt., Save Preferences, I think perhaps you are asking for two things: one, include more of the system settings in that choice, and if so, you should list everything you want to be added; and two, create a 'song settings' preference (as opposed to what we have, which is really a system settings preference). Is that right?

Well, for example I just tried the existing "Save Settings" and the VST I had wanted to include did not get restored when I closed and opened BiaB.
It would be great if the saving were more reliable and inclusive.

Speaking only of the VSTs and VSTis, you can save that manually by using the 'save group' button on the 'vst/dx synths/plugins' window. This saves your configuration for all four mixer slots in a .tgs file.
To check it, open the mixer and click on the 'none' button on the track you want to start with, load your vsti and select a voice for it, load a pg effect in the second slot just for play, then hit the 'save group' button. Give it a long descriptive file name, make a sub folder named after the track you're working on (example Bass)and save it. Now click on 'none' to un-load all you've just done, then click on 'load group' find the file you just saved and see it load everything back just like you saved it.
So, I say =Bring Back The Combo! One way to do this would be to put a couple of buttons down by the 'combo' spot (on the 'vst/dx synths/plugins') that saves and loads all the mixer tracks just like the song or mgu file does. A little added gravy would be to also have the old combo drop down but it would just load the config file the user assigned to each combo group (we could have an icon for a 'swing band', 'jazz band', etc.
Also, biab could (optionally) open the last used combo on startup (it pretty much does that already for the main vsti).

. Here is an example:
I have used the "Add or Remove Buttons" command to set up the buttons that I see on the main screen. There are more buttons available than will fit, so it is pretty much necessary to set up an individual configuration. I DO want the Roman-numeral button that changes the way chords are identified, and I DONT want "Save" "Ear Training" or the Style Maker. I saved this configuration as "JDW DEFAULT."
I used OPTIONS>SAVE PREFERENCES to save the configuration I wanted. Then I ran RETURN TO FACTORY SETTINGS. The button array was reconfigured, as expected. Then when I went to OPEN PREFERENCES and asked for the JDW DEFAULT I had saved, the button array stayed the same. The buttons were not restored to the configuration I have chosen and saved.
This is just one example of how certain aspects of what I thought I was saving does not get saved. Please give me a SAVE command that actually saves everything.

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks
MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:
There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:
1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track

"Band-in-a-Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is, without negative connotation, a monster of a program. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. No DAW can do some of the things BIAB does, while BIAB can do a lot that DAWs do."
