I got files that can't be open because they a RAR files I read about what they are. My question is
what's a (free) safe program to download to open them. Just got this new computer and don't want
to take any changes downloading anything bad. They came from my old computer and I could open them
with the old one but not now on the new one.

Well, WINRAR http://www.win-rar.com is the major app for this but its not free.

I use 7-zip to open a huge number of different archives (including RAR). It's brilliant and it's freeware. http://www.7-zip.org/Noel

You use SFArk to unzip SFArk files. I uploaded the file here. It's a zip file, because I couldn't upload the exe directly. It works (for me, anyway), just fine in Windows 7 64-bit. It's a free application (no licensing required).

I seem to remember downloading and installing a program to unArk soundfonts, then having it time out on me. but If it DOESN'T time out, I may already have this program installed.
If its a different unzip program that timed out, then I just need to install the one Noel mentioned, and I should be covered for everything

Pat, Soundfonts are generally compressed with two programs. One is SFArk that John mentioned and the other is SFPAck. I keep both of these on hand. It's easily found on the net. Happy New Year to you!  Noel

Pat - If you need it, you can download SFPack here. However, SFPack files have a .pack extension and SFArc files have a the .sfarc extension. I do know that a lot my downloaded soundfont files were double compressed, first with SFArc or SFPack, then with WinRAR or WinZip. I remember the first time I got a RAR file (and I've owned WinRAR for over a decade - and have never paid another penny for it); I decompressed it only to find it was an SFArc file - what to do. That's when I found out about the SoundFont specific compression utilities. SFArc is a fairly old program, so if you are having problems (especially with it crapping out on you, and knowing that a lot of the Soundfont files had fairly long file names), I would move the file closer to the top of your directory tree. Maybe create a folder called C:\SF and do the work there. Just a thought.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
