Perhaps CCleaner would remove it?

Did you reboot afterward?

If it is still there, you could probably just blow away the link manually. Navigate to C:/Users/X/Desktop where X = your user name that you login under

You will see a bunch of files with LNK as the extension. If the app is listed there, rename the file for the app you want gone. For example, change Mozilla Firefox.lnk to Mozilla Firefox.bak

However, if the app is not be listed there, it could be under C:/Users/Public/Desktop

Another technique, a bit more dangerous, is to use Run, MSCONFIG to access the startup programs. Uncheck to one you don't want to run.

Don, reboot the machine in Safe Mode and see if you can delete it then.

Don, did you run the registry cleaner part of CCleaner?

If not you may want to try that. Scan the registry and see if any errors pertaining to that icon are there. Just be sure to backup your registry prior to deleting anything, I E. the CCleaner will prompt you to back it up.

I hope this helps.

Here's something to try, Don. It requires going to the command prompt, but it might be worth a try:

Quote:

Solution for Vista's "Item not found" error when deleting or renaming
files/folders

When you try to delete or rename a file/folder, you may receive a
window that says:
"Item not found. Could not find this item. This is no longer located
in [folder]. Verify the item's location and try again."

To solve, follow these steps:
1. Open up a command prompt (run cmd.exe from the Start Menu).
2. Navigate to the folder that the object resides in.
3. Run "dir /a /x /p" to display the contents of the folder, including
hidden files (/a) and 8.3 filenames (/x).
4. Find the 8.3 filename of the object to the left of the regular,
long filename.
5. Run "ren <8.3 name>" to rename the object, "del <8.3 name>" to
delete it if it's a file and "rd /s <8.3 name>" to delete it if it's a
folder.
Note: If renaming to a long filename, make sure to enclose the long
filename in quotations. If that fails, temporarily rename it to an 8.3
name and then rename it to what you want outside of the command
prompt.

Friends, since my recent problems with YouTube (no audio in FF 14.01), I now have five new persistent icons on my desktop. Nothing I do will delete them. They are all zero byte files with a document style icon and, apparently, all broken links to YouTube. This may also be the cause of my YT audio problem discussed on another thread. I hid one icon under my weather bug but five? No way! Help please?

Right click on it and see if the READ ONLY attribute is set. If it is not, boot in safe mode and try to delete in safe mode.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Eddie, I just finished a boot-time scan with Avast and found Win32:IBryte-U [PUP]. Following up on Google led to 2 results that indicated that it may be a legit file but I moved it to the Virus Chest, no change.

When you right click does it at LEAST give the location it THINKS the shortcut (aka ICON ) is?

Also this is starting to sound like you need to dig under hood a little more – even if you don’t know what you’re looking at – others might be able to help you sort this out – if you provide some information:

Look at services running (CTRL ALT DEL "Start Task manger" then “processes” ) first sort by CPU and don’t touch mouse and just watch see if anything pops in and out under “system idle process”, then after a while sort it by name and see if there is anything strange (you probably won’t recognize most of them so it might all be “strange”). If it’s not more than one full screen you could take a print screen and send it along

Next as Matt already suggested running MSCONFIG – this one becomes a little more dangerous – please PAY ATTENTION to what you click on

In any case, in MSCONFIG I would suggest looking at

1) Services( but check the “Hide all Microsoft” box lower left) and then sort remaining by “running” and again note anything you are not POSITIVE you know about/installed (again it may be all depending on your “under the hood experience” no offense.

2) Startup – and note all items listed with a checkbox (again look for stuff you don’t think you installed or whose name is unfamiliar)

I’d also suggest running “highjackthis” but I suspect this is not in your “toolkit” or experience level – but could provide troubleshooting help. But only if you think this is something BEYOND a simple corrupt file/directory or HD sector kind of thing (have you run a chkdsk by the way?)

NONE of the above is scare you, I hope it is really a minor "duh!" kind of thing. But the above is just to see if you can’t see something out of the ordinary or something we might be able to help nail down for you. IF THIS is NOT your cup of tea, maybe someone you trust can telephone walk you through more detailed troubleshooting or maybe you have a local “tech” person accessible?

GOOD LUCK
Larry

Hey Don,
did you try John Ford's suggestion to check via a CMD prompt? If there is no valid long file name, as it appears, then Explorer cannot deal with it. Hopefully access to a short filename will be available via the CMD prompt.

The windows file system has some very annoying shortcomings. This is one of them: you can programatically create illegal file names. In days gone by I've even had to resort to directly HEX editing the disk directory but this is not a task for the faint hearted!

You might try a linux live CD of some kind, using a linux shell rather than Explorer in windoze might well be successful - the distro will need to be able to write to NTFS though, many don't.

I have managed to get rid of shortcut icons by right clicking and selecting "cut". They go grey and are still there, but when I've restarted the computer they are gone. Maybe I've just hidden them, I don't know, but at least they aren't clogging up the desk top anymore.

I usually end up with icons that I can't delete after I've un-installed the program without deleting the shortcut to it first. I get the same "file not found" message. Very annoying!

Hope this works for you as well.

Just on a hunch Don, try Revo, a very good uninstaller program. You can download the freeware version here, on the lower right side:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

This program has helped me out a number of times and does a very good job of removing any registry leftovers.

If in properties it has a name, you might try to find the name in Windows > Prefetch. If it is there delete that file and you should be able to delete the icon. If there is no matching name you can check the properties and match up day and time created to that file. Some things can't be deleted because they are in use and that is a place where they can hide. I just had a pesky item that kept me from using the export function in Macromedia Flash. I could find it but it wouldn't delete until I removed the Prefetch file.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
