I want to record several movies that won't be available after 4/30/2013 on Amazon Prime. There is no way that I can view them all in that short amount of time so so I need a app to record them as I sleep. I tried Freecorder 7 but all that did was load malware on my system, CouponDropDown and something else.

What do you folks use to record movies? Does Amazon use a special copy protection? I had assumed that I could record anything that I could see onscreen.

Are we talking bootlegging?

Don, I just did a quick search on the question "recording Amazon Prime streams". I found a couple of forums where people are talking about trying to crack Amazon's DRM protection. That means Amazon has those streams encrypted like Netflix does. You can't legally break that encryption so if there is something available it's hidden on one of those underground hacker sites I know you love so much. Since that's not an option, your only choice is to buy those shows from Amazon or try to find them from another source.

Thanks, Bob. Not interested in "cracks". The particular movies are free to Prime Members. I was hoping to "time shift" before they expire tomorrow. Thanks for your input.

I was not trying to encourage "bootlegging". Bootlegging includes sharing what you have recorded.

We can make cassettes from CD legally; We can rip a CD to .mp3 files or DVDs to .mp4 files legally; We can record Broadcast TV with a VCR legally; we can record cable shows with a DVR and it is not considered illegal. Why would recording a stream of online TV broadcasts be considered any differently?

As far as I know, the program I mentioned above (Debut) records whatever is on your computer legally. It would be illegal to share.

However, before proceeding, you should read the Amazon Prime Terms of Service (ToS) carefully to make sure your stream recording will not violate it.

I have no desire or intention to share them illegally. I want to watch them myself but they come down today. It's too late since they comprise several hours in recording time.

It appears that Amazon owns this content outright therefore as the legal owner they have the right to control it however they want. They have chosen to encrypt the stream so you can only watch it using their approved player and that stream cannot be downloaded or copied unless you have found a way to break the encryption. I suspect that capturing the stream using special software is probably a violation but who knows. Yes, you can record any show to your DVR but ever tried to record HD from the back of your DVR? You can't because of the same encryption. My DirecTv DVR only has standard def RGB outputs that can be plugged into a stand alone video recorder or a video card in a computer. Part of this protection is the high quality digital outputs. They don't care about standard analog stuff, it's the hi def digital they're worried about. The HDMI hi def output is encrypted using military grade encryption and you can't touch it. This is also why all the newer DVR's no longer have component outputs for HD because those outputs cannot be encrypted but it can using HDMI. That's why HDMI even exists in the first place. Component HD worked fine for years. The picture quality was great but no encryption was available because component is analog.

I would be willing to bet that if the providers had some way to prevent video capture programs from working they would because they do have the law on their side. However practically speaking how can they prevent this? Obviously they can't so a program like Debut might work under certain conditions. Does it really capture full HD without tons of glitches? Just curious.

Here's a good article I found about this but note where the guy talks about the quality of your internet connection, the speed of your computer etc.

"Bootlegging includes sharing what you have recorded."

I stand corrected, a poor choice of words, and I apologize.

"We can make cassettes from CD legally; We can rip a CD to .mp3 files or DVDs to .mp4 files legally; We can record Broadcast TV with a VCR legally; we can record cable shows with a DVR and it is not considered illegal."

NONE of this is legal, as a read thru the covers or credits make clear. Just because we have the means is not a license to do it....

And, no I am not a lawyer or entertainment attorney, or a watch dog or snitch, just a person who has got burned twice by copyright law, and advise people to Just Not Do It....

Is the default behavior of Microsoft Windows Media Player illegal? Every time I place a CD in the drive, it automatically rips it. You would think Microsoft would know better.

And the cable and satellite companies who install their service and then sell you a DVR! This would be considered material support of illegal activity, if you are correct.

These activities are not illegal.

That said, Amazon may have a rule against this so the OP should check out the TOS.

This can get tricky but I think it's the same argument about gun control. It's not the tool, it's the person using it who could be doing something illegal and if someone decides to do something illegal with it it's on them not the maker of the tool. MS is trying to sell their software and they know their customers want that ability but it's not their problem if users decide on their own to take those ripped files, start making their own CD copies and violate copyright.

As for the DVR, the sat and cable providers already have agreements in place from the content owners to allow for those recordings. Like I said above, they don't allow for digital copies from the DVR to other media including your computer that could be shared. You can make all the analog copies you want from the RGB outputs but ever tried watching a SD program on your 55" big screen after spending a few hours watching HD? It's almost painful.

Head to "[url=http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-xp/help/windows-media-player/11/rip-a-cd]This Page for WMP11 and go to the bottom, where it states..

"Unauthorized use and/or duplication of copyrighted material may be a violation of copyright law in the United States and/or other countries/regions. Copyrighted material includes, but is not limited to, software, documentation, graphics, lyrics, photographs, clipart, animations, movie and video clips, as well as sound and music (including when MP3 encoded). Violation of U.S. and international copyright laws may subject you to significant civil and/or criminal penalties."

That is their disclaimer, it does NOT make it legal because a MS product automatically starts ripping a CD. You can turn this off.

I will bow out now. This is like any conversation about folks using Warze or Cracks. It is Illegal by any stretch, but there is always a way to justify it I guess. And this is NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON ANYONE, so if you are offended by this, maybe it is your conscience talking to ya.....

All I can say in closing is read EVERYTHING you are getting ready to rip, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT SHARING IT! Protect yourself & be safe!

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
