When you use Melodist to produce a MIDI melody does it produce the same patterns or does it produce random patterns? If I used the Melodist to produce a melody bit for my song would it be possible/likely to hear that same melody bit in another BIAB song? Since melody is a copyrightable part of a song I guess I would be reluctant to use it without some major changes afterwards if it produces the same patterns.

Hi John,

I use Melodist from time to time and I really like it. It's a fantastic source of songwriting inspiration for me.

My experience is that the melody-creation routines work on random notes within a prescribed range and using signature rhythmic patterns that are characteristic of the style/artist after which the routines are named.

When you listen to songs on the radio, melodies, in general, have a significant amount of repetition. This is important because it is (a) what makes a melody memorable and (b) what aurally defines the different sections of a song (e.g. chorus, verse, bridge, etc.). Maybe it's me and lack of experience but my observation is that the Melodist does not generally use too much repetition when making melodies and it does not create signature melodies for different sections.

This is not a problem, though, because the Melodist uses MIDI and it is very very easy to alter the notes in any melody that is made by the Melodist.

So, to answer your question ...

... you have total control over the end product that begins with the Melodist so no two melodies will be the same unless you want them to be.

Below is a link to a terrific Youtube clip that PG Music have put together that will help you get the best out of the Melodist and the Soloist.

Hope this helps,
Noel.

If anyone reading this thread is interested, here is how I use the Melodist (following the numbers on the below image) ...

1. Select the style/artist.

2. Click on the "Melody" button (this will preset settings so that only melody is generated).

3. Select "Part of song" because I tend to work on a section at a time.

4. Set the section of the song I want to work on.

5. Set the "Instrument" to piano or jazz guitar because I find these the easiest to hear while working on the melody.

6. Select "No harmony" because, at the creation stage, I'm only interested in melody.

7. Set the Melodist to use the "Current Key".

When all the above are organised, I generate the melody and listen to what is created. When I listen, what I'm looking for are some good melodic motifs that I can use 'copy and paste' with to create a song-section. If nothing stands out, I regenerate another melody.

Eventually I get some melodic motifs that are close to what I am after. When that happens, I use a combination of Piano Roll mode and Notation Mode to modify the melody so that it becomes exactly what works for me.

In a nutshell, the Melodist creates something that I would never have thought of myself. This, in turn, inspires me to make something else that is uniquely mine.

Noel, this is awesome! Thank you so much!!

Just to clarify, if two BIAB users started with the same chord progression, in the same key and used the same settings for the Melodist, would it produce something very similar for each or something significantly different for each?

I understand the fact that it produces MIDI so I can manipulate it afterwards but what if I really like a melody BIAB produced? Would it be safe to use or would it be likely that same melody would be showing up in other people's songs as well?

John,

After playing around with the Melodist for a while, it seems to me as if it's very similar to Realtracks. If you generate a particular RT enough times, you can hear snippets here and there that are similar but, when taken as a whole the tracks are generally different.

I'd say that chances would be slim that you'd find someone else has used the Melodist to create exactly the same melody.

All the best,
Noel

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
