Hi,

I am using BIAB version 2012.5(357). I am entering a melody into a bossa tune. I will not be playing the melody. I simply want to print a lead sheet so I can print copies for myself and for other people who I will be jamming with. I am entering the notes in "Editable Notation Mode". Everything was going just great until I hit some quarter note triplets. If the tune was in swing time (with 3 subdivisions to the quarter note) I would be fine. Is there any way to change a bar or even a half bar from (dividing the quarter notes into 4) over to (dividing the quarter notes into 3) so I can enter the quarter note triplets and get it to look correct. I had this problem before and I had to go back in with a pencil and mark it to be played as quarter note triplets. I never thought to ask last time.

Thanks,
John

John, first read this:

http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq35.htm#25

You should be able to get the sound you want. You may or may not be able to get BIAB to print notation that is what you want. It is nicely explained in the FAQ.

Hi John,

Here's a link to a post that might help also.

The above thread also contains other links to additional information.

Having encountered this frustrating problem on a regular basis over the years, I have to say that it is such a basic requirement, especially in Latin music, I think it really would be worthwhile for PG Music to come up with a proper solution, rather than just a work-around.

Band-in-a-Box is by far the fastest way of entering notes, compared to other well-known notation programs, but it still has some limitations when it comes to the proper display of other notation symbols. I know that more effort has always been put into the music being produced, which is great, but I do think it is time to rethink the notation to make it more conventional and easier to enter. I think that far more users are printing lead sheets than you might imagine. I even think it might be the majority of users! It certainly is the #1 requirement in my circle of musical contacts.

I look forward to the day when there is no longer a need for the qualification that that says, "Note that while your music will always play the way you input it, you may not always be able to get triplets to display exactly how you want. This is a limitation of the Band-in-a-Box notation display."

Anyway, back to the original question. One thing that is not mentioned in the solution as outlined is that, when you print the lead sheet, you should do it with the 'Triplet Resolution (Swing)' box ticked in the 'Notation Window Options', even in a tune where most of the notes (except the triplets) have been entered into a 16th note display.

It works for me - most of the time. smirk

The next thing is to get the notation symbols to function in a musical sense. smile

On those occasions when I have difficulty making the lead sheet look correct, there are two other places to look for finer adjustments:

Play, Slide Tracks: make that a zero for the instrument at hand.

Right-click on a note and adjust a note's start time.

Thanks everyone. I will look at the info today.

Here is another twist that just occurred to me. I want the background to play in Bossa style (quarter note divided by 4 time) but still be able to print out the lead sheet with quarter note triplets (the first one in some cases tied to a prior note such as a half note or maybe a note from a prior bar). As I study the info I will see if it can do this. Realizing this leads to another idea unique work around solution (the BIAB clever beginners way - not that I am that clever - LOL).

Beginners solution:
I could have two BIAB files. One for the rhythm in Bossa style with quarter notes divided by 4. The other for printing the lead sheet with quarter notes divided by 3. Based upon my limited use of BIAB over a limited number of years, I figure the lead sheet will not be any different (it will appear correct). (NOTE: I tried this and it worked but when you play it the melody gets screwed up. You have to go back and Humanize it in swing then it appears as it should).

For most of my more important songs, I wind up with four files: BIAB, SONAR (for multitrack mixing), Adobe Audition (for final mix down and edit of stereo .WAV and .MP3), and Encore (notation). There is some overlap in what each of these can do, but I use each for its strong points.

At one point I was thinking of trying MuseScore but time and priorities have not led me there yet. In my mind the BIAB "Edit Notation Mode" is brilliant and a few others have commented that they basically agree. It is a great way to enter music fast. What it needs to take it to another level is an ability to (on a quarter note by quarter note basis) temporarily change the vertical marker lines from the default that is initially set up to (4 lines per quarter note or 3 lines per quarter note) as required or even a different value such as 5 lines per quarter note. So in other words the musician would right click on the first vertical line and see the various options available (4 lines per quarter note, 3 lines per quarter note, others) and they select it and then they see the lines. So in a swing time if they want to write a double time melody they would switch it to 2 or 4 lines per quarter note for maybe 1 full bar only. Now that would make the BIAB system really shine (but that is a beginners view of course - BIAB is my first musical notation software experience of any significance). As a programmer I think it would be a challenge. Programmers love that however. The problem is management has to pay them (or ultimately the customers have to pay them for this magic).

So here is the question. Does any other software provide "Edit notation mode" with the vertical lines and can it do what I have suggested in the above paragraph?

I figured it out. Here is what I did.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
