I just installed the Tech Preview of Windows 10 (64-bit) on a Virtual Machine. For kicks (and I didn't want to burn a 2014 license) I installed BIAB 2013 on it. Foe the most part, it runs fine but I get an old error message (haven't seen it before, but it was mentioned on this forum back around 2011.)
"Cannot find Sound Font File GM.DLS"
It DOES play, but the error message is annoying. So far it does NOT like Coyote (hangs.)

That file is associated with the Microsoft GS Wavetable. Does that file gm.dls actually exist anywhere on the computer, and if not we should find out whether the MS wavetable synth will still be included in Windows.

PhillyJazz,
FYI: I did the exact same thing, except I installed 2014 and just clicked "Cancel" on the activation menu. I get that same error you get, but it seems to run fine.
I haven't had much time to explore this further, but I'll report back here with findings.

The MS Wavetable still exists (perhaps they changed the name of the Soundfont file?) Wavetable still works (sounds as cheesy as ever.) BTW, I tried to copy the file from my Win 7 host into the same directory as MIDIMAP but could not get around the file protection even though I have Admin rights.

FWIW back around 2011 you could still tinker with the actual samples used in GM.dls .. not so much these days. citation: http://wiki.spheredev.org/Changing_soundfontsAlso, used to be that windows update with MediaPlayer set to be the default .mid file player would cause it to be updated/downloaded. Not sure if that would work with 10 though! I've never had an issue copying and pasting that file. See link above on how to stop the error. It is owned by Roland, not Windows; they just license it. Open the file in Notepad and about the only thing you can read is "Copyright 1996 Roland Corporation U.S" At one point I replaced the GM.dls file with the Chaos soundfont as described here - http://www.tipidpc.com/viewtopic.php?tid=242963 This was back in XP, but supposedly W7 could use it also. It ends up being about a 12 meg soundbank compared to the regular 4 meg collection. Most instruments sound better, but as always you are stuck with that set. To get even more in-depth, I went as far as to modify the chaos bank and recreate the dls file trying to improve it, but it was a lot of work for very little return once softsynths came on the scene.

I might try the Cakewalk SFZ player. I got that running on 8.1 (but it takes a LOT of tweaking every time you start BIAB.) It just doesn't hold the settings. I made my own bank out of various samples (142MB) and between LoopBe and Asio4All I can just plug my MidiSport Uno into my surface and blow my Wx-7. No wires (Roland Cube Street amp.)
Still, I can power my Ketron SD4 with the USB from the Surface, so would probably go that way on a gig.

As long as the Surface can be plugged into a power source .. powering the Ketron from the Surface battery via USB wouldn't be advised.

Why is that? My SD4 has not worked with a power supply in years (and I have no idea how to get that repaired.) I power it from my desktop 24X7. Too much battery drain?

Yes, powering it from the desktop gives it a source (the power supply) I suspect using the Surface battery will cause a noticeably shorter battery life. I'd experiment before trying it live so as not to suddenly go silent in the middle of a set.

This brings up another question. Does the Surface act like most laptops in that if it's plugged into AC you get noise from the headphone jack? This is asked about all the time here with lappys and the answer is to either use a two prog adapter or run it off the battery.

Power adapter is 2-prong. ZERO difference plugged or on battery.

The way you wrote that isn't clear, you're saying the Surface does have the same problem as most laptops so you have to use an adapter to lift the ground otherwise you get noise?

The power adapter is a two prong plug. There is ZERO difference in sound from the Surface PRO 3 when it is powered by AC or running on battery through my headphones.

I think this still didn't answer Bob's question, since PhillyJazz never actually stated whether there was any line noise/buzz in the first place. I assume the answer is that there is NO noise in the headphone jack, whether on battery or AC power, hence zero difference.

That is correct. I don't know how I could state it more plainly. ZERO=none. There is NO noise from the headphone jack whether powered by AC or running from battery.

The power adapter is a two prong plug. I may be a little dense, forgive me. When you say adapter that implies this is not the stock one that comes with the Surface hence my question. An adapter would take it from a stock three prong to a two prong. But if it's already a two prong then it's not an adapter it's simply the plug that comes with it. So you're saying out of the box the Surface comes with a two prong plug with no ground and therefore no noise when it's plugged in? Bob

I began selling computers for Compaq in 1997. The term "power adapter" does not IMPLY anything. It is the common technical name for the AC power supply (and appropriate cord/plug) for any given piece of computing equipment.
The term "power supply" is insufficient because it does not specify the type cord cord/plug (which in many cases is of proprietary design, particularly with regard to the connector on the device itself.)
In this case, the standard plug that ships is a two-prong ( non-polarized NEMA 1-15P.)
Again, there is NO difference in noise through the jack when the computer is plugged in or running solely off it's battery.
I hope this clarifies things.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
