This is another one of our Jazzy Blues. Working with Janice and Bud on these collaborations is pure joy. We seem to be locked in regarding the vision of the final product. Bud’s observations on the mix were indispensable. One interesting note was the use of two generations of B3 panned left and right creating a much fuller sound. All comments/suggestions are welcomed. All I Do

Your eyes tell the story
Yeah it's getting kind of boring
Sittin round here every night

Bad dream we can't wake up
Too much time to make up
Seems you've lost the will to fight

All I do is try to make you happy
But I only make you cry
When I say that I’ll always be true
It comes out sounding like another lie.

I pulled out that old sweater
Maybe it's the weather
But it's feeling mighty cold in here

What started out so naturally
It's hard to believe that actually
It's gettin kind of weird

All I do is try to make you happy
But I only make you cry
When I say that I’ll always be true
It comes out sounding like another lie.

Hi Janice and Tom,

What a wonderful listen!

Individually, your performances are as professional anything out there on the world stage. Collectively, your performances paint a masterpiece. Très magnifique!!!

I really liked the 6-line verses. The aabccb rhyme scheme is perfect and well set with two groups of two lines of shorter meter followed by one line of longer meter. (I was at a Steve Seskin seminar once and this line-length pattern of 'short, short, long' is one lyric-structure technique that he said he enjoyed working with.)

The arrangement (in particular, the stopping of instrumentation on line 2 of the chorus) is creativity at its most inspired.

There's nothing to criticize here. All I could do was sit back, close my eyes and enjoy smile In fact, I'm heading back there right now to do that again!

All the best,
Noel

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Tommy and Janice,

This sounds great! Unbelievable clarity in the audiomix here.
You guys probably use the audiophile edition? The drums sound really bright, and yes the panned organs work very nicely .
Janice, your vocals are terrific (again) the best I heard from you so far.

Regards,
Rob

Tom and Janice,

The stop at "always make you cry" is a masterpiece , really draws attention to that sad line.

beautiful guitar as always Tom, and need I say again that I think Janice's vocals are PERFECT.

Noel, thanks for the kind words. We ways enjoy your analyzation of the song structure. I have to admit I never think of those things in advance. I am concentrating on the rhythm of the words and how they roll off the tongue. I'm glad you liked the stops. Besides Janice's impeccable vocal that was my favorite part. Tom

Hey Rob, Tom's on vacation so I wanted to see if I could answer your inquiry and then let him elaborate and/or correct me! I don't use the audiophile edition and I'm pretty sure Tom doesn't. I attribute what you are hearing to the use of Izotope's Ozone 5 on mastering and Necter 2 on the vocals. Tom is really good at tweaking these to make a production sparkle. I'm a work in progress with them :-)

Janice says a big thanks to all who have commented on her vocals!!

Really? He's on vacation? Again?

Love the opening licks. And the little drum thing at the beginning. And the way the piano guy comes in...nice.

Solid lyrics - and even more solid melody. Sounding new and old (familiar) at the same time. And OH! that singer! Every word sung like she really MEANS it. You were BORN to this, girl.

Tom - you just keep getting better and better in all aspects. This lyric is quite "natural" sounding. The production is studio quality.

Janice. You should be famous. Period.

Y'all done good.

Hi Guys and Janice.

Well, the production, arrangement, recording and mix just scream out professional whichever way you look at it.

Add to that Tom's wonderfully expressive guitar and the fact that I could listen to Janice sing all day long - you begin to get the idea that I quite liked this one.

In fact, I thought it was great throughout!

Rob, Bud covered the answer quite well. Not the audiophile and I use Ozone5 soon to be Ozone6 for mastering. Thanks for your kind words. Tom

Loved it! Janice's vocal is absolutely fantastic! That mixed with your outstanding guitar chops, backing tracks (love the B3), lyrics and stops coupled with a super mix make this a winner.

If you two keep making blues songs like this you may want to contact Alligator records: http://www.alligator.com/

I'm sure they would sing you!

Wow! Just big ol' jaw droppin' WOW!

where to begin? This is perhaps the most visually evocative song I've heard in a long time. I can almost see the lead character saying all these things to her man as they slow dance in a honkytonk. Her words are flavored with beer and she's playing with his collar as they slowly make their way around the dance floor.

Cass Elliot would have to improve dramatically to come up with a performance half this good. What Floyd said about you should be famous...? yes, you really should. Maybe you'll be the next Eva Cassidy... unknown in your lifetime, but the body of your work will be rediscovered someday and somebody else will buy the rights from your estate for a pittance and get filthy rich.

And Tommy... I'm listening with headphones, and I'm hearing all kind of interesting tricks you slid into the production... one of my favorites is the way you pan the drums during accents! And the rock solid arrangement of instrumental parts... I know it didn't come out that way the first time you generated each part! There's clearly a lot of tweaking in this project to make it sound so thoroughly live! I absolutely love this song!

I'd say more, but the alphabet just called and complained that I'm using too many letters. (awesome job.. really!)

Wow!! Just Wow!! This is an amazing song. I really enjoy this whole production but could also imagine this song being done in a Honky Tonk Blues style and running up the country music charts. Good music is just good music. I have never been able to explain accurately what it is that I consider good music, but this is a fine example. And I just now read Pat's comment, so here's another WOW!! for good measure.

Pat, I absolutely love the creativity of your comments. I have said from the 1st time I heard Janice that she has a special gift. Thanks for your comments on the arrangement. Bud was a great help in hearing some critical parts of the mix that I was missing. Together we made it work. We always enjoy hearing from you! Tom

I'm REALLY glad you said this...

It's so easy for Janice's incredible voice to become the only part of the review that gets any attention. But Bud and Janice are definitely a team, and most of our reviews tend to lack sufficient comments about the MANY valuable things that Bud brings to each of these projects. I've often admired the way Bud so graciously steps back into the shadows when the world is showering the project with accolades. That's the mark of a person who engages out of love, not out of a desire for attention. Gotta respect that. A lot.

Writing amazing lyrics, creating pleasing arrangements and making creative observations about possible enhancements to a song are just a few of Bud's special gifts, and I feel compelled to say it out loud for once instead of presuming that everybody knows it.

You too Tommy. As awesome as you are at just about EVERYTHING... in any given set of comments about a collab between you and Janice, chances are pretty good that we're all so busy talking about Janice (and rightly so!) that you are probably not going to hear a similar number of comments about your contribution. (Which is always HUGE, by the way)

Bottom line, your collaborations are awesome because the sum of everyone's contribution simply pushes it over the top... every time!

Thanks to all of you for bringing such good and inspiring music to the User showcase!

Pat, I sincerely appreciate that. Janice and I have such a long time and wonderful relationship that everything we do together from mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, working around the homestead to music is simply a pleasure. Yes, there is a lot done "behind the scenes" but as you pointed out it is, indeed, a labor of love. Our collaborators are so easy to work with and so helpful that it is simply good old fashioned fun! Well, maybe with the possible exception of having to learn so much new software at my somewhat advanced age. grin What really ices the cake is when we read remarks like yours. It is easy for me to slip in a state of doubt about the validity of what we are doing.....and then I read your comments and it all seems worthwhile. Thank you.

Yes! The mix is tight. The guitar draws you in and the vocal knocks you out.

You've certainly found a winning combination of creativity.

His latest video, Next-Level AI Music Editing with ACE Studio and Band-in-a-Box, he explains in detail how you can use the Melodist feature in Band-in-a-Box with ACE Studio. Follow along as he goes from "nothing" to "something" with his Band-in-a-Box MIDI Melodist track, using ACE Studio to turn it into a vocal track (or tracks, you'll see) by adding lyrics for those notes that will trigger some amazing AI vocals!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
