Hello all. I haven't been around the Showcase much lately – we've been busy doing the guerrilla busking thing a lot shocked , so I hope I don't get accused of “dumping” or whatever it's called. grin

A little song about loss. All RT's except for the strings and chimes.

Daddy's Coming Home

©2014 Robert Randall Burke / BMI

I got the news today
Don't know how I'm gonna tell her
I have to find a way
But my heart has turned to stone
Can I look into those eyes
And change her life forever?
Can't find the words to say
That Daddy's coming home.

And it's only been a year
Since her Mama went to heaven
How can I explain
That now, she's all alone?
She's counted down the days
Till they would be together
And she would hear those words
“Daddy's coming home”.

Me and Grandma
We'll do the best we can
And try to tell ourselves
That it's all in His plan
There's just some things
You'll never understand at all.

I got the news today
Don't know how I'm gonna tell her
I have to find a way
But my heart has turned to stone
How can I look into those eyes
And change her life forever?
Just can't find the words to say
That Daddy's coming home
There are no other words to say
But “Daddy's coming home”.

It's great to see you posting again. With the quality of the songs you submit, I for one won't be concerned with you flooding the forum.

Excellent write, production and mix. I look forward to hearing your next posting.

Bob,

Streaming on bandcamp and sound cloud just ain't happenin' for me today. I will offer my thoughts on the music as soon as I can hear it... but I ALWAYS like your songs, and I don't expect this one to be any different

Even without being able to hear the music, I can read your lyrics (Thanks for posting them.. that's always a big help in terms of wrapping my head around a song) Wow. Highly emotive topic! Was it inspired by Veteran's day? If not, I can see how it very well might have been. I hope it's just a fictional composition and not based on your experience.

Anyway, having read the lyrics, I can't wait to hear the whole project in context. Additional thoughts will be appended to this post.
------------------------

OK, I finally got BandCamp to play the song...

Wow, Bob, your deep conversational voice is absolutely PERFECT for this song. Even though you do have a melody, your presentation is so natural that it comes across to me exactly as it is in the song.. as the troubled thoughts of a loving grandfather faced with an extraordinarily tough exchange of words with a grandchild... made all the more heartbreaking when you put 2 and 2 together and realize that this man is putting his own grief over the loss of his son aside momentarily in order to minimize the devastation to his grandchild. Powerful stuff! (And pretty much the way that recurring story tends to work itself out...)

It isn't always easy to get endings to fall into place the way we'd like, but MAN! You nailed this one! All the right flourishes in all the right places! I dream of endings like that but rarely do I get one that resolved!

The chords and arrangement.. every detail of this production perfectly enhanced the mood and intent of the story. As we say here in NC.. "you done good!"

Hello Bob,

A really beautiful song! Touching.
I hope you didn't really have to tell her?

Since I could not find the words... I used Pat's. He's just so dang good at it.

OK. Worth the wait. Except for the "rippin' our hearts out" part...

Such power in a "conversation" lyric. This is what songwriting ought to be.

(On a different note... when you are busking to guerrillas... do they tip well?)

Nice work. I think this is some great retro country ballad style music. Nice treatment of the topic.... maybe I'm slow on the uptake but I didn't, couldn't quite figure the back story out.

You use a technique in writing this that's not been used in country in quite some time.... repeating the first verse for the last. That used to be done a lot.

It took me a minute for the melody to click..... then I remembered the song this reminds me of...

David Allen Coe's Mona Lisa Lost her Smile.... the melody is really close.... I'm a big DAC fan so I'm digging this song of yours.

As far as the gorilla's.... do they like you busking them?

Hi Bob.

Nice to listen to one of your songs on here again and what a good one it is too.

Very professional production and mix - definitely Radio-Ready.

I particularly liked the emotive vocal delivery - it reminded me very much of Elvis Costello singing "Good Year For The Roses" which has always been a favourite of mine.

Everything well up to your usual high standard.

ROG.

Charlie,

Thanks for the kind remarks.

Pat,

Thanks, but I really can't take credit for this one. I just dusted off my old David Alan Coe records and searched for a melody that I could rip off. The words came easily after that.

Anne-Marie ,

Thanks for the kind words. No, the song isn't personal.

fj,

Thanks, and unfortunately, guerrillas are lousy tippers. Now, chimps – they spend like there's no tomorrow! grin

ROG,

Thanks. Hope all is well for you.

Bob

it just occurred to me that it pleases me when people like my friends songs, and say so openly.
It also pleases me that y'all are my friends.

It follows that reading through the user showcase and seeing all the positive comments is a good way to start the day on a positive note.

I know it's a cheap way to post but Pat, floyd and Rog have
said it all so well. I suppose when one is getting complimented
redundancy is good.....so Plus One on all the above. It's
really beautiful.

Really beautifully delivered! Vocals are top notch in terms of production, technique, and emotion. Reminds me of something Charlie Rich might have done years ago. Like Herb, I also was a bit confused by the story but I loved the way in which the words were used-very natural, and conversational as Floyd said. Excellent work! BTW, what kind of mic/pre/processing on the vocal-Man they sounded good! Take care. Greg

OK Bob if you are going to dump then for God's sake keep dumping songs like this!

Everything that I was going to say has already been said; great song, super vocal with an outstanding mix.

This is a keeper!

PS - another DAC fan here.

A favourite of mine also.

An excellent vocal which makes the song linger in my mind, as I am humming it in my head as I type this!

Greg,

Thanks for the kind words. That was done with a Studio Projects C1 LDC into a Focusrite Saffire then into Sonar X3. A little delay, verb and compression.
