I am curious any first hand experiences with pitch correction.
I have a singer, who is pretty close on pitch...but isn't on. He is flat fairly often, sometimes sharp, but also some real clunkers in there.
That being said, his tone is pretty much exactly what I am looking for. From my understanding, tone is the part you really want to be on. Pitch, within reason, can be corrected.
Has anyone found the results to be pretty convincing? I'm not into the technology side of the tools as much.
I have melodyne available from work, but never use it. I have toyed with it in the past, but not that much.
To be clear, I'm not looking for a t-pain effect. Just a natural sounding vocal.
Thanks

You should be able to get what you want by running it through Melodyne. Though you will need to learn the basics of it. With your background that should not be a big deal. It will allow you to move things (pitches) by the amount (percentage) you choose. You don't want to make everything dead-on - you will lose the feel doing that (the singer's style) - but you can move stuff by 70-85% and get correction. You need to be diligent - going note by note - because sometimes (if your singer is way off) it will go the wrong direction. You need to work one phrase at a time...
I'm sure Herb will weigh in, he swears by it.

Melodyne ROCKS!!!
Learn how to use it.
Use it manually.
Use it judiciously.
I've caught grief from others for using it. But I don't care.... I use it on every single lead vocal that comes through my studio. My ears are very sensitive to pitch issues and melodyne visually confirms what my ears are hearing. I don't always fix everything, just the hot spots and rarely the BGV & harmony tracks unless they conflict with the lead.
Wanna hear examples? Listen to everything on my web site starting at the top..... yup, they are all "fixed" to one degree or another.
Melodyne, in my humble opinion, is the absolute best pitch correction available to folks at an affordable price. It is 100% transparent when it's used properly. And I consider proper use as making the minor fixes needed to put an already good vocal track on target. When it's properly used, the listeners can NOT tell where it was used and where it wasn't. If the vocal track is a "dog"... delete it and record it again, don't attempt to fix obviously badly recorded tracks.
I have Melodyne Editor (poly) and use it not only on vocals but also on guitar, sax, drums, and even piano. It can pick a single note out of a piano chord and flawlessly alter it..... It's also handy for fixing timing and volume issues with notes.
Never use the "automatic pitch correction" function. Always work through the song a phrase at a time. Take your time. Don't fix every single note and even the ones you do fix can stand to be "not quite on" sometimes.
Other tuning programs don't even come close to ME's level of professional performance. Auto-tune is not the same thing, not even close. I don't use AT. I also do not use V-Vocal. Neither measure up to Melodyne.
Also: Melodyne can help you learn how to sing better. That's a topic for a different thread, but it's true.

Ha, I do the opposite of Herb! I tend not to use it on lead vocals and then slam the backing vocals / harmonies a bunch!!
I guess I really need to go phrase by phrase, though -- that really does seem to be the best overall solution (from what I've heard, since I haven't done it -- ha, ha).

Good thread. One question though would you use melodyne to pitch shift one note in a song that your voice cant reach, rather than just use it for pitch correction?
I ask because I posted a song in user showcase, most people said that I should move key up a tone or so, but I was at limit of my range as one note in song in Key b is eb over an octave above middle c, so bringing that one note up a tone f well beyond my range.
I got this feeling that it wouldn't work right.

Hi musiclover, My answer... "yes". This is one of Melodyne's real strengths. Provided the pitch shifting is not too dramatic (i.e. greater than a tone), it will rarely be heard as being adjusted. Melodyne is excellent at keeping all the characteristics that define a sung sound intact. While I have Melodyne, I tend to use it more for creating harmony. My main vocal tuning tool is the tuning plugin, ReaTune, in Reaper. That being said, I'd have no hesitation in reaching for Melodyne if ReaTune didn't do the job adequately. Regards, Noel

Musiclover Yes, you can do that.... However.... A much better option is to plan ahead in BB and be sure the song is first of all, in a good key for your voice.....and second.... compose the melody in such a way that YOU can hit all the notes with relative ease. I will often re-arrange the melody in a song to compensate for my lack of ability to hit the high notes. If you're straining to hit a note, the listeners will hear that strain and it will distract them. Try to sing in your "power range"....stay out of the lowest end and the highest end or find someone who can sing in that range comfortably. If you're writing for a singer who sings with ease above your range... try working with that singer to sing the song. Using ME to slide the note up will probably not sound as good as having someone sing...and hit that note naturally.

Hit it on the head there for me. If I can't hit the high note, I'm tuning that song down.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
