Hi,
I have(had) a Korg I3 keyboard and I use BIAB and Sonar 8. The keyboard just died and now I'm looking for a replacement keyboard. I do have a Ketron SD2 Midi module which I bought a few years back after reading what some of the reviews and I use that for sounds and not the internal I3 sounds.
So what I really need is just a controller.49 or 61 keys not weighted. I'm not a keyboard player, bass is my main instrument but I know my way around the keyboard well enough to play some basic stuff.
So I have a computer with XP, USB2 and a firewire port.I would like to have a controller that can act as a transport control for BIAB and Sonar.
Novation Impulse or Alesis Q61.... that's what I have been looking at. Are those contenders? I don't want to spend a whole lot of money.I really don't know much about this stuff,
can you guys make some suggestions?

You have some homework questions to answer before making recommendations:
1. Weighted or unweighted keys?
2. Mod and pitch bend wheels or joystick?
3. Want sounds on-board or not? in other words, will you ever gig with it by itself?
4. Do you use anything but the SD2 for sounds - like VSTi plugins in your PC? If so, it can be advantageous to have non-key controls available on the axe like pads, knobs and sliders that you can map to parameters in the plugins. In this case, the Impulse runs circles around the Alesis, which has pretty much just keys.
5. need polyphonic control? Some novation axes are mono, as are some Alesis but the Q61 is definitely not mono.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
