It appears that Windows 10 is not as free as expected:

But then, who really expected that this company gives away its "flagship"?

I've installed Win 10 Home this morning in about 40 minutes. Everything went well and everything is working. The only issue I had was Microsoft Money 2007, as the program was looking for components of the IE version 6. That was easily fixed by a registry value change.

As far as DVD player is concerned, this VLC player works and is free:

http://www.videolan.org/index.html

Could care less about playing Solitaire, etc ... laugh

My DAW programs are working, so is BIAB/RB. Even the latest driver for Win 8.1 for my AKAI EIE Pro USB sound interface works beautifully with Windows 10. The sound seems even better as it was with Win 8.1. I can take the volume on the unit down quite a bit in W10 compare to W8.1.

All in all, my machine is running smoothly and very fast. At least to me, it seems the entire system runs a lot quicker.

I tested all of my applications. No problems at all. Maybe, I just got lucky smile

Cheers,
Mike

Folks running older computers, and seems especially Windows 7 over four to five years old are having problems big time.
28 pages of black screen freeze faults when trying to install Windows 10 here :-

If you haven't made a full back up such as a complete image to an external hard drive, then you are stuck as nothing works and you cannot roll back. It happened on my laptop. Thankfully I maintain image backups, so could revert back using the image.

Yes, you can roll back to 8.1 or 7 from 10 ... you have 30 days to do so:

I think the issue is that if you black screen and can't even boot into Windows, then you won't be able to roll back, because you can't even get to the screen to tell Windows to do so.

I made sure I had a clean image before I started my upgrade. Luckily, I didn't have to use it.

I don't know Nev, this is one of those forums I look at for 30 seconds, everybody seems like numbnut idiots and I move on. The first 4 or 5 posts they're saying they bailed after an hour or two. I wouldn't worry about it until it gets to like 3-4 hours or so. These are the kinds of guys who left a disc in the drive, or their sister plugged in a flash drive while it's trying to upgrade or whatever else they're not telling us.

I only pay attention to big well run tech forums with pro's who have a clue and this forum where I've figured out who knows what they're doing and who doesn't.

Exactly, Bob. As I recall, after the first reboot during the installation process, the screen WAS black for a couple of minutes. I think, people just panic and thought that their computers 'hung'. My machine is not that new anymore either. Patience is not everyone's virtue.

Mike

I've been "playing" with Win10 since last Sat and have had no problems with BIAB. I thought I had a Win10 glitch which turned out to be an existing BIAB problem. In the help menu I can't type anything in the search box but I can scroll through the index.

Also http://www.paragon-software.com/landing-pages/2015/virtualization-manager-win10/index.html

Go Virtual 2015 allows you to create a virtual clone of your existing Windows system – including all of its applications and settings – in just a few clicks. This clone lets you run new systems in a virtual environment such as Oracle VirtualBox or VMware Player (or even in Linux environments) and use them virtually the same as ever. This way, you can be on the safe side and access the applications you need, even if they don’t (yet) run perfectly on your new Windows 10 system.

First update your virus/malware apps and run a scan.

Since you should be running backup software anyway, get backup software that does disk imaging. Then (1) make a new, clean disk image (not an incremental) on a removable drive and (2) make sure your rescue-boot drive works.

Then if Win10 doesn't work I believe you can just go back to your disk image with no problem.

And don't expect everything to be free. For years, MS has been putting add-on software companies out of business by incorporating them into Windows. Many of the apps really didn't belong in the OS. But it gave users a reason to upgrade and stay inside the Windows ecosystem.

I suspect many, like solitaire, will no longer be free (I got tired or that in the 1990s after I won a couple of times). They will be ad supported or pay to remove the ads. Others will no longer be part of Windows, but you can buy them at the Windows store where MS will make a commission.

MS saw google/iOS and realized that when others are giving away the OS, MS is going to lose market share by selling theirs.

They also looked at how much money Google and Apple were making doing three things (1) making a commission from store sales (2) making a commission from ads and (3) selling your personal information to marketers.

So as they saying goes, if you can't beat them, join them ... and Microsoft joined them.

It's a whole new world for MS, and you have to give them credit for seeing the handwriting on the wall and changing course mid-stream.

"Reporting in. Overall the Win 7 x64 to Win 10 x64 went pretty smooth.

I took the opportunity to replace the fixed boot drive to a SSD & add an extra 240GB SSD for libraries at the same time.

I made an image of the Win 7 boot disk & then swapped out the drives, restored the image to the new SSD drive, then proceeded with the Win 10 update.

No issues with the M-AUDIO Profire 610 connected to a VIA firewire card, yet.

Cubase Pro 8.10 launched with only 1 issue, any MIDI input devices set to DirectMusic had to be reactivated & made visible in the device Manager.

Kontakt 4 & my installed libraries, Play x64 (Word Builder in EWQL Symphonic Choirs), MOTU Ethno & UVI based Moto Symphnic Instrument, BDF2, Ivory II, NI Guitar Rig 4 and RealGuitar all performed with no issues in both x64 standalone & as VSTs in Cubase.

Slight issue with MAGIX/Independence Pro finding .aif files for the former Yellow Tools Majestic & Candy, still troubleshooting this.

Slight display issue in RealStrat, cosmetic only, the product performed without issue. Have to check for an update to the product.

All external hardware is performing without issue: M-AUDIO Keystation Pro 88, M-AUDIO Axiom Air 49, a few Steinberg CMC controllers, Korg PadKontrol, Frontier AlphaTrack.

Still doing some additional testing, but so far so good."

The above is a report from a member of the Keyboard Forum. So, everyone's experience is not the same. It looks like the majority of the reports that I've read have been favorable and music apps are OK with very few but fixable glitches. Ray

Good to hear Ray. I hear some people are getting on fine with Cubase, others have MIDI timing issues. I am sure there will be an update from Steinberg some time quickly anyways

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
