I'd like to duplicate the sounds of some of today's contemporary, Christian rock bands. Red. Illia. Switchfoot. etc. I also like Coldplay's sound. Is there a repository or knowledgebase of style equivalents where I can search for appropriate sounding styles? Wouldn't that be awesome?!
Or, if anybody has tips on achieving the sound of the bands and genre listed above, I'd love to hear it.

The short answer is yes, The PGMusic suite of tools of BIAB - BB, RB the audio chord wizard, the midi style wizard, BB's midi capability, Real Tracks and 'live' audio capability collectively provide the tools you can accurately duplicate nearly note for note renditions of the songs by the groups and genres you mention.
The tools necessary to do it will vary from song to song and not every tool is necessary for every song.
There are multiple ways to capture the signature instruments and riffs of particular songs even if you are unable to play the signature instrument live. Live always works but is contingent on the ability the performer has in accurately playing the part.
Midi and the ACW are your friends here, particularly in doing covers.
The process is fairly straight forward but can be tedious and time consuming.
For a cover I'm attempting to create an accurate reproduction or realistic duplicate, I start with running the song through the ACW and spend whatever time it takes to develop an accurate chord chart, tempo map and in the proper key for my vocals which may vary from the original key the song was recorded in by the original artist. I choose a style that is similar enough to the original style of the song to assist me in completing this step. I normally choose a midi style for this due to speed of regenerating as well as a suitable midi style is easier to find for a particular song in most cases than a Real Style.
Then I proceed bar by bar notating instrument by instrument individually, what each instrument is doing and when changes take place. I start with drums, then bass, and repeat this process for every instrument. My final step in charting out the song this way is to do the same with the lead and backing vocals.
I then build each track individually, track by track following my notes for that instrument closely. For instance, if there is a drum roll at bar 15, I make sure there is one in my track at bar 15 and I accomplish this most times by cutting and pasting generated drum rolls rather than settle for what BIAB may generate. I repeat the same for each instrument track closely following my notes detailing what that instrument is doing at each bar.
This is a process for duplicating a song as a cover. It is much more time intensive than creating a backing track that in most cases, is more than adequate to perform with.
