Why would my saved BIAB file sound all jumbled up when I reopen it to begin working with it again?

I used the melodist, then changed the style, saved, and rendered, but now I want to reopen the BIAB and try a different style with it, but it seems slowed down and jumbled up even if I hit regenerate.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Welcome Andrew.
What version of BiaB?
Did you use RealTracks or MIDI files?

Trevor

Are some of the tracks frozen, by any chance? If so, unfreeze them.

Is there an accompanying audio file with the same name as your BIAB song file? If so, rename that audio file.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Thank You both!

I'm using BIAB 2015.

with the melodist it renders the song with midi styles, then I selected/switched to a real style, then saved or rendered them in mp3 format, and that plays them back just fine.

The problem was when I close the program and reopened later in the same BIAB format/file in order to try the same song with another real style. Everything messes up. the tempo comes in too slow, the parts are jumbled up, even when I try to type the correct tempo in, nothing changes.

I have not used any frozen tracks.

Ok, no frozen tracks. But you say you rendered to an MP3 file. If that file has the same name as the song and is in the same folder, it could produce the symptoms you describe.

Once in awhile, a song file gets corrupted. It's very unusual in my experience, but it can happen. One way to determine this is, does this problem happen with other songs? If only one song is corrupt, you will have to re-enter it.

Also, you may not know the standard first steps to take when something in BIAB doesn't work as it should. First, reboot your PC. If the problem persists, in BIAB do Opt., Return to Factory Settings.

Hi Andrew.

To elaborate a little more on this thought of Matt's, it's possible that if the rendered file is present in the same directory/folder as the BIAB file that you are hearing the audio file playing along with BIAB. As a consequence, when you change the style and generate it, you'll hear a mish-mash of old and new playing together.

Also did you create any performance tracks?

One way to double check the above is use Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory that you stored the SGU/MGU file in. Once there, find the file and rename it to something like filename_old.mgu (or .sgu) depending on what the extension is. Keeping the original filename as part of the new name (as above) will make it easier to identify the file. While in the directory, also double-check to see if there are any audio files that start with the same filename as your song (e.g filename.wav, filename_somethingelse.mp3, etc.). If there are, move these to another location.

Now open BIAB, navigate to the renamed SGU/MGU file and load it. Regenerate. Does the problem persist?

NOTE: Make a copy of the file before renaming it. This is just a safe-guard and will give you a back-up copy if you need it at any stage for whatever reason.

Let us know how things go.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks, Noel. Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. It's like having a set of frozen tracks along with the ones being changed. Further, I'm guessing that the gain on the audio track is higher, so he is hearing primarily that even though it doesn't respond to tempo changes, but the current song is playing as well, giving the 'messed up' effect.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
