Another silly Scott song, based in part on actual events. I know, been awhile, but I'm good for at least one song a year. Any feedback is appreciated. https://soundcloud.com/scott-h-olson/call-your-mama-tell-her-get-the-mailCALL YOUR MAMA, TELL HER 'GET THE MAIL' Copyright © 2015 by Scott H. Olson Wake up baby I've just had a dream And I already figured out exactly what it means I saw you dancin' on a beach, moonlight on your hair Wake up baby, I'm takin' you there Chorus Call your mama, tell her 'get the mail' I won't take no for an answer I got the tickets both on sale She can wave a long goodbye to our vapor trail Call your mama, tell her 'get the mail' Do you remember those days on Waikiki When the sun went down I sang those songs to you karaoke I knew that one by Elvis you were glowing and so tan Wake up baby we're going back again Repeat Chorus Bridge Last night the mercury was down to nine below The weather man is still forecasting snow Baby you're too hot for winter anyway Now let's go try hanging ten on Wai-a-mea Bay Repeat Chorus The drums are EZDrummer2 For the bridge I used the 684 bass guitar at half-time I believe. I didn't use all of these guitars, either. I started with these, but pared it down to the acoustic, two electric rhythm, the nylon, and the Dire. I'll have to look at the project in Sonar again.... Scott, This is brilliant! Why isn't this on the radio? I abhor comparisons, but I'm hearing the best of Jonathan Edwards in this one. Really nice! Regards, Bob

Hi Scott, This is the first song that I have heard from you and I enjoyed it a lot. Good production, lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. Sounds like what I would like to do right now! You have a very good voice and writing skills and I look forward to (hopefully) more than one a year. Sonny

Scott,
A good write. Catchy. Your best vocal, I think. The harmonies are nice, too.
(At the risk of offending Bob), this one sounded like something Kenny Chesney would do.
I think you should replace the fingerpicking guitar with a strum (There is a high-strung strum that would be good if it is in the tempo area - or a syncopated strum). The fingerpicking doesn't fit the rest of the feel of the song - the strum would "hit the ground running".
Really good mix. Very enjoyable.
Nice to see ya around.

Hi Scott,
What a great song! Love the upbeat message and tempo. I'm gonna stay outta the "sounds like ..." discussion, other than to say it sounds like Scott on his best day. And there ain't a thing wrong with that!
As far as the finger picking that Floyd mentioned, I tend to agree with him. I think it would give the song just a bit more drive, and for the listener, the sense of more of an urgency to get to the beach.
But, all that said ... great song. Loved my listen!

Nice work my friend.
It's a nice, upbeat, feel good song.
Loved the line about waving goodbye to our vapor trail.... that was good. It created the perfect imagery in my mind.
One thing I think maybe didn't work as well as it could or should have, is the bridge. The song is sunny and upbeat and the bridge is kind of a musical downer... slower and darker... I would consider dropping the bridge and just come straight back into the chorus. This bridge seems to fit my personal rule for "bridge or not"..."NOT" ..... because it really doesn't seem to add any new or crucial info or a twist that makes you view the song from a totally new perspective suddenly after hearing it. It's more of a filler and you don't need or want filler for the sake of filler. If you're going to add a bridge, try making it shorter. Halve it to two simple lines that add some insight. I think part of my dislike for it was that it was too long. If you need to slow it down, temporarily lose some energy, and make it darker... don't stay there long. Get back to the chorus, sunshine and energy as quickly as possible. 2 short lines and done...
If it was mine, I would come right back from the solo into the chorus. Don't give it a chance to lose the energy level you have going.
And .... shorten the title to "Get the Mail"
Man, I really liked this song. It's got that "island theme" in it and I tend to love those kind of songs.... toes in the sand, drink in my hand.... (Chesney lyrics there.... my wife is a HUGE KC fan, so I've become somewhat of an expert on island country)
Excellent write.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Scott, since folks are comparing we'll throw ours in. How's about Chesney meets Buffet? This has a most enjoyable upbeat feel and the write is really good with nice imagery. As Janice just said "let's go there right now!" J&B

floyd First, what I'm most excited about is that so far the mix is passing muster! Regarding the guitar, you mean in that first verse? When I play the song, the way I wrote it, it's with palm-muted driving 8th or 16th notes. In the BiaB version I opted to ease into it a bit, and I'm not sure I could find the right RT. I probably just need to play that guitar part. Thanks for checking it out and for those nice words, Floyd.

Yes. That 1st verse. The finger-picking is not right for this. The song has a great rhythm to it - the fingerpicking guitar starts it on "the wrong foot".... the song is too good to have something like that "detract" from it... if you can't find the right RT, then you should do it yourself... if that doesn't work out, get some help here on the forum... Tom, Herb, (me)... but you can do this...

Thank you, Guenter. My harmonies are always trial and error. I practice/sing one part against the lead and then repeat if adding another vocal part.

Funny how a song that seemed sort of odd at it's inception ended up being okay. I may have mentioned that I used to refer to my songs as 'feel good music' so your 'feel good tune' description makes me feel good:)

Excellent write. Thanks for all of those thoughts and recommendations, Herb. I gotta' say that getting a thumbs up from you means a lot. I would have liked to weave in some Hawaiian slack key guitar - I started to record my own, but gave it up. Luckily some of those lead guitar RT's sounded 'island' enough to work. Btw, I changed the title to 'Get The Mail.' Thanks for listening. Scott, since folks are comparing we'll throw ours in. How's about Chesney meets Buffet? This has a most enjoyable upbeat feel and the write is really good with nice imagery. As Janice just said "let's go there right now!" J&B "Let's go there right now!" That's exactly what I was hoping for. Have fun:) I really didn't know where this song was going when I started it, all I had was that 'Call your Mama...' line. We lived in HI for a few years, and I did sing karaoke to my wife at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki during our first days there. Once that story found it's way into the song, it was off to the islands. Glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Year! Thank you, Keith. Hi, Scott !
I loved it too !!!
Cheers Dani Appreciate that, Dani. Sorry I'm so tardy in responding. It all been said! I really loved the song after the first verse. Everything after that verse is radio ready IMHO.

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
