Hello:

My wife did the free Windows 10 upgrade last night, upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Now, she can't access any of her files. They don't show up on Windows Explorer and she can't access them from within any program.

A brief announcement appeared on the right side of the screen when her computer was starting this morning saying that she was signed in under a temporary name/password and that she didn't have access to her files. The notice was up on the screen for a very short time, so it was hard to understand what the situation was or what she should do.

I would appreciate any suggestions from any Windows 10 experts. Did anyone else experience this when upgrading to Windows 10?

Thank you for any help.

John

I did not experience this on any of my PCs.

Does your wife have a Microsoft account, and does she know her password?

I did not experience this. It sounds like malware has struck.

Can you duplicate the message? If yes, film it. Ask Microsoft sending them the footage.

Take the harddrive out of that computer, put it in an external casing and copy the requested files using another computer.

From my best practices collection:
I did a full backup before going to Windows 10,
I did a full backup after I went to Windows 10.

This way I'm sure I can access all necessary files.

Matt;

Thanks for responding.
Yes, she has an account and knows the password.

She was able to talk to someone with Microsoft support who did a remote access and got her files to where she could access them.

However, most everything in her Downloads folder was GONE. The microsoft support person said that the windows 10 update would automatically erase any third party software in the downloads folder and that there was nothing she could do.
I found that part shocking.

GHinCH:

She did have files and a report sent to Microsoft to see what happened.
98% of what she needs is accessible, but the downloads folder thing as mentioned above is a mystery.

Thanks for responding.

Oh, wow. Me too. I've never read that in any article about Windows 10.

I have the full Windows 10 manual from Microsoft. I'll look in there when I get home. That was despicable.

I looked it up on the internet:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3008227/windows/windows-10-november-update-apparently-deleting-some-third-party-programs.html
http://www.zinstall.com/how-to/how-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-without-losing-your-programs-and-files

and others. Apparently it is true.
I haven't missed anything so far, and since I saved my user folders before upgrading additionally to the backup, the upgrade couldn't delete anything I wanted to keep. If it did, I will find it again, since I have a copy of the state before the upgrade.

I use their OS, but since Microsoft every now and then wipes out users' work*) by changing this and that, I don't trust them. In addition to my weekly backups I save downloads asap to external drives.

*) Example: On Windows 2000 and XP I did enter properties for many files (like pdf and others) that showed up in certain columns in the Windows Explorer. MS changed some standards and claims that the other software companies didn't follow that change.

I always save my downloaded files to my own created download folder. Likewise, I don't use the My Documents folder, either, but instead have my own "MyData" folder on a different drive. Too much stuff gets auto-populated in those folders which makes it difficult to find stuff for me. And now, this with the download folder. I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

Ditto, to what John said. And it helps to have your downloads on another drive, other than your system drive.

I have my SSD drive for the Operating system and everything else is on additional drives I've installed.

Very odd indeed. I upgraded to Win 10 a little over a month ago. My Download directory is completely intact. I routinely run Ccleaner, Defraggler, Speccy (as mentioned in the article)...no change what so ever. Programs are fine and the original downloads are still in the Download folder.

Still, like others have mentioned, I backup all of my files and mirror my hard drive to an external drive.

John, MikeK, Mountainside:

Thanks for responding.

Yes, a backup would have been very wise, obviously something she now deeply regrets.

I don't know why Mountainside's Download folder is intact while my wife's was cleared.

The Microsoft support person wasn't very clear on how the update decides to remove third party software.
I'll look more into that.

GChinCH:

Thanks for finding the articles mentioning that some things are sometimes removed in the Windows 10 update.

Yes backups (FULL monthly, weekly would be better, with daily differentials), different directories instead of the default "downloads," "My documents," etc.,

But with this version of windows people might want to seriously consider upgrading from the free Win 10 Home (from Win 7 or 8 home) and pay the extra bucks ($99) to upgrade to Win 10 Professional - if you don;t already have the Win 10 Pro via your upgrade.

With Win 10 Pro you can control when updates get installed (you can at least DELAY them for a long enough period, like that Nov update fiasco that was pulled - where all this deleted SW reports came form) until you see the affects on the various PC's and configs used but free Win 1`0 Home (beta or guinea pig) testers.

Please note it still falls to you to PAY ATTENTION and READ about the updates before installing them (and a backup just prior is ALWAYS a prudent IDEA)

Your expensive DAW (RB/PTPA, Sonar, Mixcraft, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One, Pro Tools) and other music SW (BIAB, soft synths, Musescore, Finale, etc.) - possibly productivity or other additional hobby software from non-MS vendors (Photoshop, SPSS, Simtools, tax prep, games, your kids and grand kids pics/movies, etc) not to mention all your sweat equity (labor) in recording and editing your music.......ALL DEPEND and SIT under the CONTROL of the OS over which most users have little insight and now with Win 10 (Win 10 Home in particular) even less control

Happy New Year to ALL my friends here (and even those that block me :-) )

Larry

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
